Looking for an idea for a first car for my brother. I'm keen on Toyotas as I've owned one previously and had it for years and was gutted when it finally died.

I was looking at the Yaris for him but wanted other suggestions.

Depends on what will be reason the car is most used for. There’s several good small cars on the market. Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia, Hyundai I10, Renault Clio, also a lot will depend on his budget. The main thing if buying a used car is don’t buy on impulse or because you like the color, one with as few owners as possible, and a proven service history, preferably with a main dealer. And most important of all have the car inspected and test driven by someone with long time car experience, preferably a mechanic. That’s about al the advice I can give you on the limited information provided. Good luck, and let us know what you buy and whether private seller or from a car dealership.

Yaris, Polo, Corsa, Aygo, IQ, VW up! , C1/C2

Anything up to 1300 cc otherwise the insurance will be a killer, 3 door cars attract a loading over 5 doors

I would always go for the Yaris...they just keep going, are generally reliable and cheap to maintain.

As always...buy on condition.!

So we saw a Yaris a while ago, checked the insurance and it was reasonable and he could afford it.

He's starting an apprenticeship soon so will be paying for everything himself. We saw it on this list of first cars whilst we were researching and worked out it's within his budget. He's keen but I wanted to make sure it was a good decision beforehand.

Thanks everyone.

Get a Yaris, my mechanic always recommends them to anyone wanting a reliable car, but again, need to be vigilant in choosing a honest one
