Prius Gen2 Wheel Bearing Sound

Looking abit of Help/Advise.

I have a noise like a Front wheel Bearing has gone (Groaning) on full lock both left and right. I did think its odd both fronts going together (only had car a year) but it could of been going/gone prior to me buying it.

With both front wheels off the ground I've checked the bearings a few times over the year and there is no play. When I spin the wheel there is a very slight noise.

I was going to replace one (due to not working at the mo) and then do the other later.

Got the passenger side hub off, bearing moves smooth and is tight. Did the same with the drivers side and also good.

Mileage is 105K (bought car at 84K) noise has been there the whole time.

Did a transmission drain and fill at 84k and oil that came out was clean, car has a Full Toyota service history but did it anyway.

Any suggestions on what it could be?

I have a slight bearing noise on my 2006, but given that you can hardly hear it and I still get good consistent fuel economy (~60 MPG), I figure it is not causing any drag. So far, it has been like that for 5 (maybe more) years and never got worse, so I figure it doesn't need doing yet. I keep an eye on it and it gets tested as part of our WoF (warrant of fitness–UK MOT equivalent) inspection. If I notice some deterioration or when they note some play I will look at it.

Do you get the bearing noise when on full lock, but no noise when driving straight?

Cheers Deet

Maybe it's just the tires? Does the sound stay the same on different road surfaces?

No noise driving straight only noise when almost full lock at slow speed, noise is still there when jacked up and off the ground.

It is there all the time and not loud at all.  As I'm not worried about it, I just tune it out.  Your noise sounds a lot worse than mine.

Hi,

That sounds like a CV joint on the drive shafts.

If no noise when straight the joints are almost in a straight line.

When on full lock the joints are in maximum angle.

May be worth greasing up the CV joints.
