And the Rain Came Down

Winter is coming soon so I thought I'd set upon the only spot of rust that has been bothering the ol' girl. Hoping some rain would conveniently cancel my project: I begrudgingly began the horrible process of confronting the damage. When I started my excavation, a little too much of the car came off for my liking. Oh yeah and acid, lots of acid. Too much had vanished to go straight for filler: I needed to employ some aluminum mesh.

 

 

Then I went to town with the filler. Having done the rear bumper, I was pretty confident - but I still had to do two passes. Honestly it could use another fill but the day pressing on and it would have been autistic to continue. Thankfully my art-deco project sanded off fairly wheel-arch-shaped, I think.
 

 


Now we're at the bit where I really don't know what I'm doing, certainly when it comes to blending paint - this then (a spot largely out of sight) would be my gentle introduction to the craft. I opted to mask off the area inside the door and a line half way up the arch where a feature in the body might hide my shortcomings. I scuffed everything up some. First I primed the bare metal and bits where I'd used filler.


 
 

Next, three coats of colour and three of lacquer. I just painted with absolutely no regard to quality or correct practise as I figured I could basically eyeball it at this point. This was in stark contrast to the machiavellian nature in which I approached the rear bumper. The finished product (under close investegation) actually looks like it might be bubbling. But, after a final blast of underseal behind the arch, I can rest assured knowing my work is perfectly sound and free of rust.

The wagon is big enough to sleep in diagonally. By using the boot-cover to vertically seperate the front and back of the car, and with the addition of some doubled-up eBay curtains: I've been roughing-it very privately. It's nice to be able to sleep anywhere, for sure. But if anything I've learned that nothing beats a real home. 6/10
