Is It Worth It?

I was jus wondering, i have been looking at how much peeps have been spending on their yaris's and people are spending more on mods than the car is worth. Then when you come to sell the car, it worth less than the book price because it is to a limmited market? is it really worth it?

if you are not planing to keep the car for some time, then theres no point in heavy mods

generally, if you come to sell a car, modifications, regardless of cost, actually lower the value of the car. (and they are harder to sell -its all down to the stigma).

The only exception is very special cases, such as 1000bhp Skylines, show winning cars etc.. which are sold to a specific area/club member.

In general, you should remove all mods and return the car to standard before selling, and sell the mods to recover some of the cost..

As for is it worth it? well is it worth spending money on going out for a meal or buying take-a-way? I mean once you eaten it the taste has gone and it cost more than making a meal at home...

i cant really moddify my car leagally because i am with direct line insurance and as i am 17 they will not alow me to make ne mods. They would not even let me have extras like factory fitted alloys?? But its cheap insurace and all i can afford.

yes it is a bit expensive when your that age, but to be honest you sound like you need to find another insurance company....they sound terrible!

Any insurance company should let you do the mods but just charge you a bit extra ....not tell you that you cant do it at all!! :(

there are loads of decent insurers about you just have to have the patience to find one :)

Like Jaxx says . It's especially true the first time someone walks up to your car and says "WOW - I want one too".

I can see exactly where Rob is coming from... A I've said before I'm a designer and there is nothing that can cmopare with someone admiring and complimenting something you've worked long and hard at.

When I see someone buying something I've designed it puts a smile on my face for the rest of the day :D

By modding your car you're essentially designing something that YOU want, and the reactions of others make up for the financial losses...

At the end of the day its mostly personal enjoyment... you end up getting pleasure out of it... learning about the car, how it ticks... how its put together... learning how to add on bits... wiring... ICE... etc... you make new friends, have a laugh.. go to meets...exchange ideas... it is a hobby just like anything else..

I have made some good friends on here so far... tho I havent met any of em yet... I have some good plans for Yaz (or so I've been told they are good :P)

I guess the question you should ask in response is...

Is it Worth it?

Can you truely put a value on what you might lose out on if you dont do it?

Some of the best friends I have, I have got through doing stuff like this :)

But why not just buy a kit car for that sort of stuff?

Personal Taste?... my boyfriend is gonna build a kit car.... thats his thing... I wanna make my Yaris sound/look better... thats mine ;)

Its the same as anything else

Collecting stamps

Playing a sport

Drinking every night

Spending 2k on a TV

etc etc,

They are all worth it, if your interested in it and thats what you want. Thats what makes life interesting!

I cant see the point in gardening, some people spend fortunes on flowers...they die, in my opinion its not worth it!

.........see my point?!

Modding isnt something I would do as I'm just not interested in it - but I have to agree that the more money you spend on something is often worth it when you get lots of praise/comments about it ;)

Interesting thread this with loads of different opinions.

I don't want to do much to my car (probably change it next year anyway) but I can appreciate what some of you are saying.

As for not being allowed alloys by an insurance company, mine (Churchill) were OK about it but they did want them to be the same size and a 'factory fitted option' ie Toyota. They will look for anything to get more money out of people, won't they?
