Spare key for 2002 Avensis without transponder?

Hi,

I bought a second-hand 2002 Avensis Vermont 1.8 from a dealer. It only came with the master key, so I had a spare one cut for a tenner. I had the option of including a transponder for an extra £8, but since I'm only giving the key to my father who would have it in case of emergencies, I decided against it.

The spare key unlocks the driver-side door, but does not start the engine. But it will crank the starter motor for as long as I have the key turned.

Do I need to obtain and program a transponder so it can start? Or is it possible to use a key without one? Appreciate it may be a silly question, but cars are not my strong suit!

Hi. You need the transponder programming as it will isolate the engine immobiliser - hence the car will continue to turn over but not start.

Yes, most recently built cars going back over 20 years or more have had transponder for immobiliser built in. my previous '98 Avensis had transponder keys. That £8 could have saved you the issue you are having now - car not starting. To test the theory, try starting the car with the key without the transponder, with the 'original key next to the key and barrel. If it works, see if the seller will sell you the transponder.

Well, I ended up buying a £5 transponder from eBay, followed the key-programming procedure from the seller I bought the key from, and, as if by magic, I now have a working spare key! An extra £3 in my pocket too!

Thanks both for your input 🙂
