Hi All,

My elderly neighbour has bought a 2013 Yaris that is catagory S, unfortunately he was not aware what that ment until he paid.

He's problem is the car always seems to drive with petrol, it appears to be on Battery to start with but after a few yards, it switches to petrol.

I'm not clued up on hybrid, not sure what to look for to say its just matter of clicking some buttons to change modes or hybrid is defunct because of the accident.

So lookingf for tip on what to check or test.

Thanks in advance

Most likely a dealer posing as a private.

If the hybrid pack is flat the engine will start

The fact the car moves means the hybrid system is working, it uses the electric motor to start the engine it's more than likely been sat and it needs a good run to get a charge, anything more than 1/8-1/4 throttle will start the engine or a slope that need a little throttle will also tend to make it start, you have to be very light with the throttle

on the touch screen press the car button and on the left it gives 3 options one of them give you the Battery state and shows what the system is doing

Tbh it sounds like a normal hybrid, they take a bit of getting used too

Check the Battery fan under the back seat. If it’s blocked then your chances of running on Battery is going to less.

Maybe your neighbour has excessive expectations about the time the car runs on electricity alone.

My 2016 Yaris Hybrid hardly comes out of the garage without the IC engine starting to run. When my wife and me want to take the car for a ride, I get into the car to get it out of the box in our garage, while she stands outsides and waits to get into the car. So I get into the car, switch on the Hybrid drive and slowly back out of the box. After just five meters, exactly when the car is out of the box and I stop to let my wife enter the car, the IC engine starts running.

The reason for this is the cold engine. As soon as the engine is cold, it starts to run in order to get warm to power up the cabin heating. I have noticed that the engine stays off longer when the car is warm, for example because it has been sitting in the sun. The car also runs longer on electricity alone when I return from a journey and the engine is hot.

When I stand at a traffic light and start up, the IC engine almost instantly jumps in after the car starts to move. My car also has an EV mode button to force the drivetrain to run on electricity alone, but this is only suitable for very low accelerations and low speeds.

Best regards from Bavaria
