Hi all,

I just purchased my first Toyota, got it brought over from England, 85,000 on the clock and I need it for big miles for work. I have had an octavia for the last 10 years and has 265,000 on it and there seems to be a big fault once a year so decided it was time for a change.

I tried turning the air con on but the air temp doesn't change, I've swapped out the relay from the horn to try and still the same so my question is how likely is it that the compressor is hammered? I had nothing but bother with my octavia and finally got it sorted but I'd hate to go back to the same issue with this. I've always heard that nothing fails on toyotas so I'm holding out hope that it's a simple regas lol.

Hi,

Assume your model has the later Digital button control panel for the heating and cooling controls ?

The first thing to check is when you press the A/C button, can you hear a distinct clunk as the compressors clutch is activated ?

Also, when at tickover, you generally see the revs rise form 650-ish to 1200 rpm as the ecu compensates for the extra load ?

Does the heating / hot air work ok in the cabin ?

A problem often missed is the pollen filter located behind the glove box, if badly blocked that will affect all air circulation to the cabin.

It's manual controls and there's no clunk when activated. Heating seems to be working well. I've included a video to show.

Hi,

Assuming your air blower fan in working ok, which means power should be running to the A/C system, then before the Mag Clutch Relay there is a 10A A/C fuse, so worth checking that is ok with a  test meter ( never rely on just visual)

Not sure where the fuse is, could be the engine bay fuse box or down behind the glove box again,  the covers have fuse locations etc stamped on them.

I would suspect low or no refrigerant, possibly due to a leaky condenser or pipe work. Any place that offers regassing should be able to confirm (or otherwise) that diagnosis in seconds. You can also just very quickly 'blip' the service port/valve which is like a tyre valve as a very very basic check of there being any pressure in the system. The flexible hoses to the compressor should also feel 'hard' if under pressure. If they are soft then there is nothing in there.

If still an issue, guessing it could be the A/C Relay.  In my recently purchased T Spirit its found under the bonnet in the fuse relay box.  I found that it wasn't working (couldn't see the Compressor engage) After pulling it out and re-inserting, it did engage.  Read that this can be the problem.

Ordered a new replacement Relay from Rock Auto in the States. Works out at about £15 delivered to UK.  So far the original seems still to be operating correctly so new one won't need fitting just yet.  I found more problems with the Buttons (You have wheels).  The Demist button wouldn't light up and the increase/decrease Fan button didn't move which you'd expect when you want to demist.  Found after tapping the buttons in differnet areas both eventually started to work. Annoying, but there is a Vid on the tube on how to replace the switches which may come in useful if they continue to play up.
