1.5 Four Cylinder Petrol Engine

Hi, I'm looking at buying a three year Yaris with the four cylinder 1.5 petrol engine.

However I am a tad concerned as ithis engine appears to have a very short production life .  I believe it came out in 2017 as a new four cylinder engine and is already being replaced by a new three cylinder design. It seems a very short life span so has it been replaced because it was a poor design?

Does anyone have information regarding the reputation/reliability of this engine?

Thanks

The 1.5 isn't a new engine - it is a re-work of the 1.33 that has been around since 2008.

Thanks, it maybe a development but it has substantially changed and is in reality a new unit.  According to Toyota the 1.5 engine used a high 13.5:1 compression ratio, adopting a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and extending the variable valve timing operation so the engine can switch between Otto and Atkinson cycles to gain optimum efficiency in different driving conditions.

The higher compression ratio was possible by the combustion chamber design and new pistons,

Cooled EGR reduced combustion temperature and also helps prevent the occurrence of engine knocking

The adoption of a new Variable Valve Timing – intelligent Electric Motor (VVTi-E) system allows the engine to switch between Otto and Atkinson cycles (and vice-versa) in a fraction of a second. Controlled electronically, closure of the intake valve is delayed, reducing the compression phase and further helping reduce pumping losses (Atkinson cycle), and enabling a prompt return to the Otto cycle for better performance under high loads. The phase shift of the exhaust camshaft is hydraulically controlled.

Toyota’s first water-cooled exhaust manifold - engineers also focused on improving fuel consumption at sustained motorway cruising speeds, leading to the introduction of a new water-cooled exhaust manifold. By limiting the gas temperature, this avoids the need for mixture enrichment to reduce combustion temperature at motorway driving speeds. As a result, both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions are reduced.

In common with other Toyota ESTEC engines, the 1.5-litre unit benefits from the latest measures designed to reduce friction losses.

I can't see this as anything other than a new design.  And it seems a lot of changes for something that had a short production life, so am concerned that there were issues with this unit

Well there hasn't been any particular problems reported on these forums with this particular engine, so think what what you want.

You asked this same question on HJ...and got the same answer. (and as above too).

Your choice...your interpretation...so if you are that concerned then I think you need to look at something else.

The engine is a 2NR-FKE and was introduced as the 1.33 1NR-FE would no longer meet EU emissions regulations and the 1.33 was dropping behind competitors for power output, emissions, fuel economy etc , the 2NR in basic form has been in use since 2010 in various models/markets ( see HERE )  it is very similar the the earlier 1.33 1NR and part of the fairly expansive NR engine family & has posed no notable issues.

I was concerned, hence my posts to both these forums.  The comments I have received were very helpful.  I didn't realise asking a question would ruffle feathers

Not a question of "ruffling feathers" as you put it...Nothing wrong in reseaching any concerns you might have...just that you seem reluctant to accept the information you are being given..?

I don't get why you think I was reluctant to accept the information.

A point was made that the engine wasn't a new design, which I queried as it did appear to be a new design from the Toyota webpage . A further explanation was provided that clarified the issue.  I made no further query so it is hardly being reluctant to accept the information and I am surprised by how sensitive you were

Not sensitive at all...and I'm pleased that you have some clarity about the issue....the Yaris has always been, and continues to be, a great car..we are on our 4th consecutive Yaris now...

I hope you continue to enjoy the Yaris too.

The 1.5 has been around 20 years in one form or another from the 1NZ, also be aware the difference in engine spec between the 1.5 and the 1,5 in the hybrid

only issues are when you get in to higher mileage (2-300k), look after the engine and it will look after your bank balance, regular oil and filter changes with good quality oil is a must

The new yaris (gen 4) is on a new platform with new engines to meet up coming Euro emission standards and moving into the future only 2 engines are available 1.5 hybrid or the 1.0 (not released in the UK yet)

I went to two forums as I wasn't sure if I would get any response from either of them - so I thought I would double my chances.

In both forums the initial response was the same (i.e it is the same engine as the 1.33).  And in both forums I queried that response (surely it would have been odd to accept the response in one forum yet query it in another!).  I didn't labour the point or dispute it further , I just queried it it was a new design or not based on Toyota's own webpage.  When that was clarified that was the end of the matter, as far as I was concerned, and i didn't query it further

Why would I look elsewhere now that my concerns have been fully address?

I did NOT mean look elsewhere for answers/opinions..I meant look for an engine you'd be happy with.!!

I think the point has been laboured enough don't you.?....you appear to have gained clarity so an end to the matter would be welcome and appropriate.
