Buying a 2010/2011 Avensis - problems + towing question

Hello all,

This is my first post so  go easy!

I'm looking into buying an avensis around a 2010/2011 with a £5k(ish)  budget, preferably an estate which will be used to tow a caravan. 

After being stung with large repair bills (£600 for one diesel injector) on my current 2009 VW Golf Tdi, and the fact I do low mileage (6-8k a year) I think im decided on a petrol model. 

Is there anything particular to look out for in regards common problems for when I'm buying?

Also has anyone here uses a petrol + auto for towing with much success. I quite like the idea of the autobox and they are quite common. Are they bullet proof or troublesome?

Petrol would be best for you.

T27 series Avensis use a CVT auto. They appear to be reliable but not the best for towing. 

Used car prices are very high at the moment and there is a shortage of stock. Wait until the New Year if you can...  you'll probably find prices take a dive.

Realese when you buy the car. The owner has a unlock key for the towing hitch. I bought my car without a key. Then i got a copy of it key.

One thing i have noticed is quite a lot of cars seem to have as advisories , corrosion on subframes and other expensive sounds things when checking MOT history. This is on 09/10/11 plate cars.
