Oil change spanner back on !.

Changed the oil and oil filter in March this year (2020), I used 5w 30 C2 fully synthetic oil (same spec. as the local Toyota agency did when they serviced). I have covered about 1,500 miles (I live in SW France -it's been a very hot dry summer here, so probably nothing to do with condensation in the oil) the car has done about 80,000 miles, it runs excellently -  it's a 2013 Yaris 1.4 diesel. I've reset the spanner light twice already (it counted down fully to the 00000's as per instructs) and it just came back on again last night after only very few miles (say 50)... Love Toys - Have a wonderful 1997 Landcruiser Colorado since new (140,000 miles)- it's pulls horse trailer & - I'm well used to Toy diesels ( b4 we had - 2 new mr2's and a new Rav4 - all petrols - wifes) Any ideas anyone ?? pls.. CCB

The spanner isn't just an oil light, the ecu is telling you there is an issue - you need to get the codes read

When was the diesel filter last changed ? or the water drained off ?

Thanks Flash22, I finished changing fuel filter yesterday - couldn't order new filter until it was out and I could see which was hiding behind the housing guard. It wasn't  a cartridge type filter but a traditional paper element in a housing, it was a true bugger to get the 2 rear fuel pipe clips back in place. I will post brief details of job, asap. ( the car is a French manufacture Yaris 2013yr ). Keeping fingers crossed re- spanner. I will get a working OBD tester anyway!!.

The Spanner light has two functions:

Service reminder

Oil level warning

If the light keeps coming back on after a reset then there is one of two issues:

Oil level is within 5mm of Max level - Faulty oil level sensor

Oil level is greater than 5mm of max level - Diesel is washing bore and filling oil sump, this is due to failed DPF regeneration there are multiple possible causes for this and there is a Technical service bulletin from Toyota for the issue search EG-0070T-0715.

The Spanner light is not related to the fuel filter is has it own warning light:

Thanks Devon Aygo,

Perhaps I'm re-filling too close to the maximum level on the dipstick ??, after the service oil change a few weeks ago, it's only covered a few thousand k's since. I haven't noticed any creeping increase in the level though. So, I will drain and re-fill, but only to midway between the Full and lowest markers on the dipstick, and then watch the levels carefully...  nothing lost as I needed to do the fuel filter anyway, it was an overdue job... thanks again for your help.. c.

I suspect it is the DPF regeneration that causes the diesel to mix with the oil. Engine oil rises when incomplete dpf Regen occurs.

I have always used Toyota to service my diesel and petrol Toyota’s, and have found after checking oil levels afterwards they have always had the oil levels slightly above the full mark on the dipstick. Why they do that I have never questioned. I just assume that they have a good reason, because they would not be partial to using more oil than needed. I always thought that it was always better to have a little less than the full mark than a little more than the full mark?

Bernard wrote:   "I have always used Toyota to service my diesel and petrol Toyota’s, and have found after checking oil levels afterwards they have always had the oil levels slightly above the full mark on the dipstick."   I wonder if this is due to Toyota filling the oil to full mark with the engine cold rather than doing it correctly with the engine at operating temperature and allowing 5 minutes for the oil to drain back down to the bottom of the engine?

Thanks guys (and girls??) for all your advice. So after I reduce the engine oil level to midway on the dipstick, and recheck - if it increases over a few weeks this probably will mean a DPF regeneration problem !?,  if the oil level doesn't rise then it has to be a faulty sensor ?. Will come back to report either way.

Thanks specially to Lee (Devon-Agyo) for comment, I'm trying to find TB ref; EG-0070T-0715  but only turning up a reference to a 4 Runner oif filling problem (EG007-02)..

This car is a 2013 D-4D Yaris is subject to a recall for drivers side airbag, so it's off to Mr. Toy at Montauban sometime soon...

Yes. Short journeys, engine never warm enough to regen the catalyst.. Or stopping the engine mid regen..which is a LOT worse..

EG-0070T-0715  can be found on Toyota tech then saved, (paid for service - 4 euro an hour) the only ones in the wild are in Russian or French

fuel filter - I was enquiring to whether it had been changed as it often gets forgotten that is why i asked it as a separate question, i was not inferring it had any connection to the oil light as has been misconstrued

Oil dilution - shouldn't be an issue if there is a significant rise in 3-4k miles you may have an issue, oil level sensor will usually throw a code
