Advice Needed On 1992 G Limited

Recommended Posts

hi

just got hold of a 1992 t-bar g limited with leather and 61k on the clock

and iam chuffed to bits with it

BUT

when checking the spark plugs i found oil in the fourth plug chamber:( , drivers side

plug number 4

i was horrified, i have to pay out mega buck to get it `sorted

my dad check the spark plug and it was quite loose, we cleaned the oil up and i have taken it for a good drive it all seems ok, just a strong smell like if a cat converter is shagged, this only happens when you acelerate hard.

the car needs a good service, which leads me onto my next question.

servicing

when buying parts for a jap import do you still get them from your local toyota dealer or someon else.

i need advice also on cambelt change its`done 61k and the previous owner advised me to change it

any info on the above will be chuffing great as i panic :(

cambelt change can cost you quite a bit. As for parts you can get everything you need from Mr T, prob not the cheapest tho.

easy to sort 1 hour job its only the inner cam cover gasket leaking oil into the plug hole

Are you sure it wasn't where someone had spilled a bit of oil while filling or topping up the oil??. Another possibility is that the rocker cover gasket might have a slight leak in that area, in which case dont worry about it too much, its messy rather than critical. Service parts for the G-LTD are the same as the UK car as are almost all the parts on the car.

I would recommend looking in your local area for a jap car specialist to get the cam belt changed, its a DIY nightmare and best left to experts. The lack of space is the worst thing about doing it. Toyota say change the belt every 60,000 miles so it sounds like you are due one. Is that 60k miles by the way or kilometers. A lot of these cars still register in kilometers even though the speedo is MPH.

The 3S-GE engine is classed as a SAFE engine, that means if the worst should happen and the cam belt breaks the engine wont smash itself to pieces. It will just cut out and not re-start.

The garage who I bought my MR2 from will do a cambelt change for £130 which seems very reasonable, mine will be due soon (57k miles). I have a rev2 import, apparently parts are no more expensive than UK versions.

Not true.. my Clutch kit was £30 more because its an import.

It shouldnt have been fella.

you know that parts such as these are the same, is just the garage / dealer pullin a fast one!

as far as i'm aware, simply matching revisions woulda done the trick, regardless of the car being uk / import.

I must say a big thank you to everyone who has given advice

on this topic. :D :D :D :D

being a new MR2 owner its nice to know people who know all about them.

Thanks to everyone for the information on cambelt change and oil in sparkplug chamber.

my old man cleaned up the oil in the chamber and since then after giving the car a good run there is no more oil, but i will check every know and then

I went to three garages and all of them quoted me £65 for the kit and £95 for the kit if its an import.. honest the part number is different.
