IQ gearbox failure

Recommended Posts

My daughter's manual Toyota IQ 2012 suddenly devloped a gearing problem and the garage is saying it is a gearbox failure quoting 1500-2200 quid

It is low mileage 55,000 and has not given any other problems

Anyone heard of any similar cases or of an established problem.  Is it worth contacting Toyota as car has been dealer serviced throughout.

thanks

Presumably the garage saying the gearbox has failed is a Toyota dealer?

No she had to be relayed to a local garage and they have looked at it and are saying it is gear box.  I kind of feel it might be the case because when I tried to move it at the gargae the gears would all engage but when releasing the clutch there was a horrible gratting noise just after the clutch bite. I thought it could be drive shaft but they have checked that and say gearbox.

Thanks for your help btw

Before Toyota make any form of decision as regards help - which may be in the form of goodwill contribution rather than the full cost - they will want the car examined by a Toyota dealer. Contact Toyota Customer Services.

Yes I understand that (and it is a logical position) but I will have to pay to get it taken to the dealer for them to probably diagnose the same outcome. And then if they wash their hands of the matter then I am left moving it again to try and get a cheaper repair or scrapping (which might be the best option).

Do you have any experinece of Toyota wishing to keep their good name with a goodwill contribution?

I have had many cars in my life and never had a gear box failure (and as a youth I broke down every week in the wrecks I could afford) so this eems odd

Personally I haven't had experience of a goodwill contribution from any manufacturer - we've had new cars from Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Hyundai and Toyota - as all of our cars have been covered either by the manufacturer's new car warranty or their extended warranty.

There are examples on these forums of Toyota providing goodwill contributions for a variety of issues - including replacement headlights, resprays, replacement 3/4 engines after head gasket failure/heavy oil consumption, etc.

However, I doubt there is any way around Toyota wanting the car to be inspected and to have the work done by their own dealer network, - and the same would apply to any other vehicle manufacturer. This is the only way they can properly diagnose the fault and ensure that any repair is done correctly.

Surely you can just get a second hand box for 200-300?
have the garage even said what’s wrong with the gearbox?

Thanks for your comments, all useful.  When gear is engaged then awful noise like grinding coffee beans when clutch is released and bites.  Assume something catastrophic in the box but of course I guess no one can say until it is out (costing 6 hours labour)

Toyota quoting 4000+ for a replacement gearbox and obviously a gamble that they would look favorably on the issue. Even 50% contribution (unlikley) would be more expensive.

Garage where vehicle is say they will fit 2 nd hand box but only without guarentee. Also my responsibility to assure box works and that it is the correct unit for the vehicle.

Since my daughter is dependent on the car we will probably have to go with local garage re-build for 2000.  I will ak for photos and post here if they show anything interesting or unusual

Is there only one manual model so a scrap box from that year should fit ....?

There are two manual gearboxes - a five speed for the 1.0 and a six speed for the 1.33.

I just had a new clutch and gearbox bearings supplied and fitted from A1 Clutches for £588. This was for my Yaris T sport but price should be similar and includes a 2 yr guarantee on the clutch and 1yr on the gearbox bearings.

might be worth giving them a call, if you have a branch local to you.

Your symptoms sound similar to a problem I had some years ago on a Nissan Almera petrol manual, but at 120,000 miles.  The (original, factory-fitted) clutch friction plate had suffered a broken torsional damper spring, so a fatigue break I'd reckon.  I had the whole clutch replaced at an independent garage, there was still plenty of wear left in the friction material, this was just a mechanical breakage on the friction plate.

The broken pieces of spring got trapped inside the clutch and wreaked havoc with the clutch operation.  A friend had an almost completely identical problem to mine on a K-series engined Rover, that was due to the same fault, but that was at similar mileage to my car, not yours.   The spring that broke is shown by the arrow in this picture (that I've just lifted off the internet).

Yours fault would seem a bit low for the gearbox or the clutch!  Any strange noises beforehand?

I am no expert here, but I would think it is reasonably likely to be a clutch (mechanical) failure - so cheaper to fix.  But I haven't suffered enough damaged clutches and gearboxes to build up much to refer to!  I'm a bit wary of flying in the face of garage opinion when they've seen the car, but I thought that this is something that could be relevant to you.
