Parking sensors yes or no

I am looking to purchase a new Yaris hybrid. I know it has a reversing camera and anti collision braking system.

That being the case is it really worth paying the extra for rear and front parking sensors?

Would appreciate your comments.

Thanks

Moved to the Yaris club.

As regards rear parking sensors, we have two cars with rear camera and rear sensors - the one having both as standard.

Quite often the rear cameras get the lenses obscured by raindrops or road dirt, so having rear sensors as well provides additional help when reversing.

There are two possible collision avoidance systems:

The standard pre collision using forward facing radar and camera to mitigate collision between your car and other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, this does not cover parking,

The Standard on Excel optional on Dynamic ( City pack ) Intelligent front & rear parking sensors which use use clearance sonar and provide auto braking to stop you hitting and obstacle whilst manoeuvring.

Optional parking sensors for the other models ( Icon, Design, Launch edition & Dynamic without city pack ) are accessory fit items and do not offer the Intelligent sonar with auto braking.

Thanks for your replies. So it looks like to be sure front and rear parking sensor would be a good idea if not already fitted, which they seem not to be on the Y20 Yaris Hybrid.

A Y20 is now the previous generation Yaris this has Pre collision but without pedestrian & cyclist detection nor does it have the option of intelligent parking sensors these are all features of the New generation Yaris.

Parking sensors on a Y20 would be accessory fit

It may be a question of price, but I never owned a car with parking sensors (I had some rentals equipped with that, though), and now I have a Yaris with reverse camera. It makes parking backwards really easy.

I do not really miss the sensors on my car. On the other hand, sensors in the rear may help you parking in reverse faster, because you can watch in the mirrors while you listen to the beeps.

Best regards from Bavaria

The reversing camera on the latest Yaris isn't the best in terms of clarity and field of vision. I had a Honda CRV with both camera and sensors. It was easily the best car I've had to reverse with. I do mean really easy. You could select 3 modes of viewing angle from the same lens to suit your preferred style. The lens position was good and it didn't suffer greatly from water and dirt interfering with the view. The picture quality was slightly better than Toyota's but the screen left you in no doubt as the the position of your vehicle and the space you were reversing into.

I find the Yaris field of vision a bit restricted and the lens is a collection point for water droplets and road dirt. This does effect the ability to reverse with confidence. We have reversing sensors fitted front and back. In the restricted parking bays which are predominant in the UK I think its handy to have both.

My wife loves the Yaris but Toyota could do better when it comes to some equipment packs on offer.

The reversing camera quality applies exactly the same to my 2020 RAV below average quality. Personally I think in car screens are dreadful to the average iPad. As for sat nav I think is should be offered but I would consider it. There are so many superior alternatives out there.

On a positive note she finds the ability to receive text or whats apps and reply to them with voice only instructions whilst driving. Thats proper hands off IT.

The OP has a previous generation Yaris (Y20).

I have a brand new Yaris hybrid that I have just scraped in a tight corner.

I used the camera to avoid the metal bar behind me directly, but couldn’t see the edge of the wooden shed to my left.

I think reversing sensors would have helped in this situation, would they?

Other half bought a Yaris Excel in March, lovely car, but vision is more restricted at front (cannot see end of bonnet Vs Mk3 Yaris) and rear view is similarly restricted. The camera is great but has some distortion (same on Auris for me on 2015 and 2018) so having the parking sensors as well is absolutely worthwhile. With the trend towards front edge of bonnet dropping away, lower seating position I wouldn't consider a car without these days. Small cost for the protection they provide.

This isn't because I can't drive - I used to be able to parallel park a Mk 3 Escort Estate in the tightest of gaps but in that I could clearly see all 4 corners (or enough of) plus a nice big back window.

As an aside, wont be an option if you go after market, but the auto braking and (on the Auris) parking assist are both very worthwhile additions IMHO if anyone considering whether to spec a new car with.

I was asking myself the same question and payed extra for sensors. Primary I was afraid about the front of the car, because on my corolla it is really hard to see smaller object ( small pillars for example) in the front of the car. With front sensors you get back sensors too.

Now I am really happy I did that, because I can not get used to use the camera. I always find myself  to use mirrors and listen to the beeping when reversing. I just quickly check the camera before starting to reverse. I have been driving with sensors for more then 15  years so it has probably affected me 🙂

Tom, I agree.

Saturday we drove in to an old coaching inn with a tight entrance.  When we came to leave a car was parked hard in near the exit making it impossible to line up and I had to enter at an angle.  Below my vision on the right was an iron post to protect the building.  As I entered the right skirt warning went orange.  A bit further I had one bar red.  At this point I chickened out.  Would it have put the brakes on and gone two bar red or would it have let me scrape the car?

I certainly need the front sensors more than the back.

Like many things once you have them you don't want to lose them.  I even miss the reversing camera if I'm in a car without one.

Yeah, same; I was pretty good at parking in tight spaces in my old Mk1 and Mk2 Yaris, but the Mk4 has far worse visibility, esp the rear 270 degrees! I used to mock people who relied on such things, but if this is what it's like in all modern cars I take it all back! IMHO the all-around sensors and reversing camera are essential in the Mk4!

I still instinctively try and look through the rear window when reversing but quickly go back to the camera and sensor display as you basically can't see anything back there!

It's just a shame they only have the reversing camera as standard but don't offer the all-round sensors as an option to all grades, not just the higher ones!

Yes, the front parking sensors are the only reason I went for a Design over an Icon for the Rav.

Because of my height I have the seat as far back as it'll go, and I can't see a thing of the front-end. I need mirrors to see the front corners, and to this day I still don't know how far/close I am to anything in front of me when parking. I end up getting out and looking or getting someone to guide me if it is really tight.

Why aren't front park cameras a thing? Ford have it on some of their cars in the USA. Absolutely fantastic!

Yeah, it's annoying as the japanese models have a 360 parking camera option! Would have loved that!

Hello all.

We have just picked up my wife's 2021 Yaris design.

The rear camera quality is really bad, much worse than the RAVs.

I am going to connect it to the home wireless and do a system update but is there anything else we can do?

The UK gen4 yaris doesn't have Wi-Fi, system updates are done by USB there are currently none available

It does the job but compared to my Dashcam the resolution and clarity of the reversing camera are a bit last decade

You can have the best reverse cam in the world, but It still uses a composite signal (NTSC) what's roughly 720x480 4:3 AR, and you're limited by the screen res what stretches the composite signal as it is on a touch2 let alone the later higher res screens

The display on my 2019 Focus was much clearer though.

The wife's other Yaris was 11plate Spirit with reversing sensors and she loved it, unfortunately I wrote it off for her so bought her 15plate with a camera and she hates it, to the point I will be fitting reverse sensors soon, on a sunny day you sometimes can't see the camera screen for the glare, doesn't matter what the weather is with sensors.
