Icon tech trim level doesn't come with auto dimming rear view mirror. My current car does, will it be a big shock to drive a car without?

Is there a possibility to retrofit it?

Otherwise the alternative is to go up a trim level to Design.

... or flip the manual dim switch on the Icon.🤣

Yes , this is a big NO of you drive at dark regularly. You can do retro fit however try to source used one or some high quality, don’t go for the cheap ones from eBay or aliexpress., they just doesn’t work fine. If you ask me I would definitely go for the design trim even just because of the auto dim mirror, price is £1000 between trim levels but you get the mirror (£700) plus larger Whees, plus some more extras and perhaps better sound proof or that it’s reserved for the excell models only.

I'm a business driver,  with a lot of night driving.

This is the first time in 10 years plus I have had an auto dim

The answer is no, it isn't an option I would choose, it just came with the excel

My Excel is the first car I've owned that had it and it's now on my list of essential features.

Is it really that usefull? Mine doesn't have it, but would surely be interested in retrofitting it in the future.

For me, yes. It's convenient. I can just leave the mirror alone and let it sort itself out.

With more and more SUV drivers and cars with higher ground clearance I was worried if they would be blinding me if they got close behind.

That's why I like it. With previous cars I've ended up driving at night with the mirror permanently hinged up rather than keep adjusting it but that means there are a lot of times when you're not getting the best view. With the auto mirror it is always reflecting the best image.

Agreed, it’s ultra important and must have extra in the car especially when buying a new 2019 and above  model, I don’t get it Toyota doesn’t fit into mid trim levels. I am a night driver and this is the best extra that I have in my car plus the build in screen for rear view camera, I like more than on the screen in the dashboard., feels more natural.

Here is my one, best extra that I have in the car. I made the picture with flash to show the display built in, day time it’s not visible it’s like normal mirror.

Is it possible to install something like this to the Corolla Icon Tech?

Could it be a plug an play type deal or am I being too optimistic and actual wiring work will be required?

I wouldn't buy a car which is without auto dimming rear view mirror, my current company car a Toyota Corolla estate hybrid hasn't got it and it's a nightmare driving at night. I have to basically turn the mirror racing the ceiling so the cars behind aren't blinding me.

I prefer manual mirrors that have the tab so you can flick them up at will. The 'dim' mirror on my Mk4 is a PITA - It hardly ever seems to dim when I'm being blinded from behind, and often dims when I'm being blinded from the front so I can't see what's behind me!!

Why couldn't they put a smegging button on it to override it and dim it when *I* want it to dim it!?

At the moment I've had to resort to sticking a blob of blutack over the front sensor to trick it into dimming at night (I had one of those magnetic sliders someone suggested stuck to it for a while but it must have gotten melted off during summer as it's not there any more and I can't find it anywhere!), and even that doesn't always work!

Limo tinting the rear window could make it slightly more bearable

My auto dimming mirror never fails to dim. I can’t ever remember being blinded by it in five years.

I've had one most of the time for the last several years, but I don't find it any trouble at all to go back to manual dip if I hire or borrow a car. You only have to do it once when it turns dark and once when you're back in daylight. No biggie, as far as I'm concerned.

In fact the rear tinted windows are the only reason why auto dim rear view mirror can fail to dim or been not as effective.
I am a night driver and auto dim mirror is absolutely must have thing, even the side mirrors should be the same and they are on some luxury cars.
It’s not just the thing you need to flip it up once at night , it’s just really useful especially these days when many cars and drivers fail to switch to dipped beams for one reason or another.

It could be, as the Mk4's rear is very tinted, but that combined with the terrible rear visibility are the only things keeping me from going blind at night

Automatic systems are nice but I want manual overrides for scenarios like this where the automatic system doesn't work properly!

Hmm, I wonder if I put a permanent tint over the front sensor to balance out the back would that make it work better?? :g:

Why not just dip the mirror using the lever provided for that purpose?
