What are the symptoms?

Is it loosing coolant?

Is the temp gauge sender faulty (is it really overheating or is the needle wrong?)

Brakes binding?

Timings set incorrectly for the petrol grade?

The thermostat has failed prematurely (not unheard of) When it's reached operating temp, is the lower hose from the radiator heading back to the engine block still cold/cool? If so it's the thermostat!

could be in need of bleeding or the block or cylinder head is cracked somewhere..

take out the thermostat is the safest bet and leave it out.
