Noisy engine in idle

Hi.

I have a 2013 Toyota avensis on a 2013 plate. Its got 211.000 on the clock apart from regular servicing which I do at 8k intervals and the usual ware and tear its been a good workhorse. I did have to recondition the alternator a few weeks back thou.

The car was running fine and normal how a diesel sounds. I took it for a run on the motorway and now it has a terrible sound coming from the engine on idle at about 800rpm  which goes when I press the accelerator at about 1000rpm onwards and returns when i let go. I have noticed a little loss in power like if I'm in second and try to pull away its was hesitant and laggy and after a few seconds it would pick up speed. It usually didn't have that lag as its only done it for a few days. I haven't got any engine lights or warning lights on.

Its a really loud tappity sound. It seems to be coming from the top of the engine but its a funny one as when you listen to it from the side by the belts it seems like it might be from there.

Would be great if I can get some advice as I am new to the forum.

Hello.

I would have said a/c compressor pulley but when you told about loss of power and hesitation my wild guess is timing chain/tensioner...

Hi Avetoy.

You could be right about the Ac compressor. My mechanic came in today to diagnose the problem. He first thought it was the waterpump there was some noise coming from it. He replaced the waterpump as he had taken old one off and it was the original waterpump. Then he took the compressor off the pulley is quite noisy. So I need to source another compressor tomorrow as everything is closed on Sunday.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks for replying.

Hi Avetoy.

My mechanic managed to source a non ac belt and has fixed the problem and yes it was the compressor pulley like you originally mentioned. I called my local Toyota dealer (Steven Eagell Toyota Birmingham) and tried getting one from them as mentioned in one of the posts in the forum you forwarded to me regarding bypassing the compressor but the part no didn't work. And he could only sell me the full size belt. I asked if there was one available for non ac he said there was nothing on the system.

Your insight on this has been greatly appreciated and I would like to thank you once again.

Many thanks

Sameer Aziz.
