Hi

Today some creep let air out of 2 of my tyres - did same to an office colleague's car.

I used the Toyota air compressor from the tyre repair kit in my Corolla Hybrid 2019 to top up both tyres and thankfully got the car home.

When I arrived home I decided to check the pressure of all 4 tyres.  The two tyres I hadn't looked at were quite low (according to the pressure gauge on the compressor).  I noticed when topping up the pressure on all four tyres that the gauge would reach the specified pressure (2.3 bar front and 2.1 bar rear) while the compressor was running but would drop to 2 bar and remain steady as soon as switched off!

I have now had a look at the owners manual and it states that the compressor "should nor be used to check or adjust tyre pressure" - see attached.  While in another section it tells you to check the tyre pressure with the unit following a repair.

I reset the Tyre Pressure warning alert on the dash after topping up all tyres and all looks OK.

Any observations appreciate.

I used the compressor really just to get my car home.  Will check all pressures at local service station tomorrow.

Hi,

Best to have separate gauge and double check each time you top up air with a compressor. All that needs to be done before you drive the car or at least an hour after you finish your journey and not under direct sunlight as all of these will set pressures very different, too high of what they actually are. Best to do is first thing enforce you drive off in the morning for example. Michelin has good gauges.

I use a mains electric RING compressor when checking pressures on the car at home.  It always over-reads when inflating tyres (as it has to overcome pressure inside the tyre to inflate it to a higher pressure) and drops to read the actual pressure when the compressor is switched off.  Experience with mine tells me that I need to add an additional 5psi before switching off and then recheck the actual pressure.  I always double check with a hand held gauge.

Tyre pressures must be done before your journey commences, ie when tyres are cold. And as the posts directed with a proper tyre pressure gauge for accuracy. Do not rely completely on compressor gauges for accurate readings.
