Revvs Up Without Foot On Accelerator

196K miles on her, and now she's starting to go. I have looked in the manual, it says nothing in reference to this symptom.

She will increase her RPMs to 2000 - 2700, with no foot on the pedal! When I am slowing for a stop sign, push in the clutch to downshift, or just parked at an idle, up go the RPMs! No wonder she's using more petrol than normal. $1.97 a gallon here in NY! More elsewhere, I'm sure!

I have also noticed that this is happening while I'm in gear driving, I think it's getting dangerous, if it was a manual tranny, it would be deadly. This happens intermittently, and kicks in and out every so many minutes,. My cruise works, but with the traffic here, it is usually off unless I'm on the Taconic Parkway. My guess is some kind of sensor or relay, but this stupid manual from Auto parts store doesn't tell me nothing like the old Chilton's manuals did! What do I look for, and where do I look for it?

Any tips or troubleshooting guide you can give me would be much appreciated. Kindest Regards and with much Respect from NY to our Allies!

It could be chewing its throttle cable, maybe the throttle pedal is worn, i had this problem with an old car - only 90k though not as high as yours! I could drive the car without touching the accelerator!!

throttle cable looks good,

did a code test and checked the ISC with a jumper,

the Idle Speed Control performed perfectly, I get a code of 5 1. Now I have to check the throttle position sensor, which the book says is adjustable, but doesn't tell you how to adjust it!

Thanks for suggestion, 97 Paseo, much appreciated. It made me really look at the cable.

how do you push in the clutch on automatic? Interesting...

anyway, whats your engine code? I doubt it, but we might have a book on your engine which will help me locate the problem... i dont think many of those camry's were sold in europe
