Celica 1ZZ-FE Engine Swap - Avensis to Celica.

Hello guys,

First time posting here.

I've got a Celica 2002 (52 reg) 1.8 VVTi (140bhp).

It's been good but recently the engine has been drinking manic amounts of fuel. I'm talking 4 litres in less than 300 miles.

From what i've read online, the easiest, cheapest and quickest (bearing in mind i'm not mechanically minded) is to buy an engine from a 2003-2006 Celica and drop that in.

I've been quoted £150 from my garage to carry the work out. I just need to bring them a suitable engine.

I'm aware that the Avensis also uses the 1ZZ-FE engine. I'm wary however of the fact that the Avensis shows its max output as around 128bhp, whereas my Celica is 140bhp. If the engines are the same, should I still be getting 140bhp considering my celica will have different cams and a different ECU mapping than the Avensis?

The only reason I ask is that engines from 2003 celicas onwards are substantially more expensive and more rare than the ones from 2003 Avensis' onwards. If the engines are the same, will I lose any power swapping to an engine from an Avensis.

Many thanks.

Even though I have never owned either models or any other model with the 1ZZ engine, I did a bit of searching. I found the following -  https://www.nipponautospares-onlinestore.com/toyota-celica--mr2--corolla--avensis-18-1zz-fe-reconditioned-engine-2001-08-998-p.asp

If I remember correctly, the difference in power is down to the ECU, inlet manifold, exhaust system, oil sump and other parts fitted the different models. The engine internals are the same across the models. You would need to remove all the ancillaries and components for your engine, to put on the donor engine, including the oil sump. The engine should have the same power as before, but more importantly, the oil burning issue reduced or stopped depending on the condition of the replacement engine. Your issue will be to source a decent engine, with good history and low mileage. So you should be looking for as late as possible Avensis 2006-2008.

I thought someone with more experience may have answered, so I waited until now.
Hope this helps.

I´ve also waited... I suggest you should repair the existing engine? Maybe all it needs are new piston rings?

Maybe more job than just engine swap but the end result would be that you would have exactly the same power, torque, etc than before...
