Cat Lock

Hi - Recent got my car back after having the cat stolen - I am looking to get a cat lock fitted. Can anyone recommend any garages in the West Midlands/Birmingham area that can do this? Trying to find a cheaper option to the dealers.... Thanks

My local garage is fitting a plate on Monday morning to my gen 4 Prius and the wife’s 2010 Auris. I bought them off eBay, south London, posted up to Cheshire. Any garage will be able to fit, it’s not technical. Could be done at home but you’d prefer the car on a ramp up in the air.

There is another thread dealing with catlocks, I said I will post photos of the plates fitted. They are 3mm thick, which is more them majority I seen, they at 1.5mm or 2 mm at the most. Dearer then most on eBay, but I believe they will be more difficult to get through due to the thickness.

Did you have a genuine Toyota cat fitted? Heard if non genuine fitted Toyota wont fit a Catloc. Presume because it may not fit over the aftermarket cat? Your current cat should be well above the floor level underneath. On my 2015 Auris there are 3 bolts either side with a triangular shaped metal piece that are already on the car. You remove these and the eBay cover secures with these with the pre drilled holes in the cat cover. Make sure the Garage who fits it, its pushed as far forward before it's bolted on, to not touch the mid exhaust box or it'll be noisy!

The Garage charged me £15.00 to install. Albion Test Centre In Burton On Trent.

Out of interest, what area of the Midlands did the theft happen?

Thanks James - That helps a lot

Birmingham area, there is a real problem with it round here.

The cage in the picture is not covering the Cat. Cat is under the steel cover in the photo. The other part is just an exhaust silencer as far as I'm aware. The cage doesn't look to do much as thieves would cut the pipe either side of the cables and take more of the exhaust if they have too. What does the cage fix to, to prevent cutting and removal? No good if just fixed to cat.

If you decide on the plate, replace the bolts with locking ones for alloy wheels. I just car filled over them. I also had 16mm steel bars welded on to make cutting more difficult.

James.

Hi, I assume that you've already seen this thread?

Just so you know, the first part of your exhaust system looks like this one -

Cat..thumb.jpg.2e158744fa90d5ea9407e64061a4bb7a.jpg

This is actually an Auris gen1, but yours is very, very similar.  The front of the car (and the engine!) is to the left.

The catalyst is shown between the black arrows, this is the valuable bit, and not remotely as visible as this when it is fitted - it lives quite high in the transmission tunnel.  The scumbags undo two bolts located in the flange on the far left, and then saw through the pipe somewhere between the two purple arrows (this is for their speed and convenience - they could unbolt the flange on the far r/h side).  They then take away the first silencer box (green arrow) as well as the catalyst, just for simplicity, although that silencer box has no value to them.  The second silencer box (second green arrow) is left behind, that has no value either. The whole assembly shown has one part number when ordered as an (expensive!) replacement.

So, you would ideally need to be obscuring/hiding/protecting the left hand side assembly - especially the two bolt holes shown, this could be by caging the l/h part of the exhaust and/or fitting a plate (difficult to do the caging on this car as there is not much space around  when all this is fitted to the car)

The second of your suggestions linked to was used recently by a poster on here, he was very impressed by their work and approach.  He travelled from your part of the world to visit these people in Harrow. IIRC. His post is in this forum somewhere!

Many of the pictures shown with these 'catloc' adverts are generic ones of pick-up trucks, which is confusing, as access to these vehicles' catalysts can be quite a different operation.

I understand that a plate very similar to your first link is being fitted (by their lease company) to a great many Uber driver's rental Aurises in London, and perhaps further afield.  I don't know how successful these are.  Perhaps someone else knows who reads this forum?  I tried to establish who makes this model in this country, got nowhere much, and ended up making one that is broadly similar myself.  Not a very time-efficient solution, but I learned a lot!

That's my take on it all, anyway.  Happy to be corrected on any of this!

HTH.

Mark, the first one you show is what I ordered for the wifes 2010 Auris, also fits CT200, thats the 3mm thick one, much more thickness then others I seen.

The one for the Gen4 Prius is totally different, its oblong, see photos taken this morning. When I went to collect the first to be done (Auris) it was already off the ramp so I couldnt take a photo but it is as the supplier photo. The seller will also send you a video of the fitting if you have Whatsapp.

His prices must go up and down, and your listing he includes p&p. Make an offer (he invites it) of £50. I paid extra for the security bolts (2) for the Auris.

The cage would be a hassle to do yourself, and a pain to get off of you to do work in that area in the future. I thought about it, but said Nah!

Just seen the posts above, the cage DOES cover the cat underneath the plate. The guy selling/fitting will do just the plate, just the cage, or both. No point him selling just a cage if it doesnt cover the cart. I have seen photos of just the cage and it DOES covers the cat.

My garage charged £20 for the two plates fitted (but I gave him £30). He says the Auris is a doddle but the Prius a little more difficult (gen4 completely different.underneath).

To purchase both plates and delivery with the two locking bolts cost me £125 + £30 fitting. A lot less then one plate fitted at main dealer.

That's good news. James:thumbsup:
