2008 Avensis T180 D-Cat intermittent injector problem

I have a D-cat T180 which is Jan 2009 registered but is the old model hence I have put 2008. The car has done 146,000 miles with no engine issues , I bought it with full main dealer service history at 80,000 as the car was and still is in excellent condition both inside and out, so to me it is worth a lot more than the actual value, so I would like to keep it running, however it has just developed an intermittent fault which feels like one of the injectors misfiring.

I asked a friend if he could identify what the fault was and which injector as my reader only said there was an injector problem. His was a Snap-on as he is a mechanic and he couldn't get a reading either. I called the Toyota garage and they said it would cost at least £160 just for the diagnostics but (even before seeing it) said I would probably have to change all the injectors. End of conversation!! I took it to a diagnostic specialist that all the local garages use and they had it for 3 days but even they could not identify the injector as they said the car itself did not tell them.

The only think they could identify was with a mega test was that cylinder 1 had 2 gohms to body while 2,3 and 4 had 10gohms to body. They therefore think it is cylinder 1 but cannot guarantee that will fix the problem.

I have looked at the price of new, reconditioned and reclaimed injectors and the prices are ridiculous. I was thinking of trying to get a replacement injector, then replacing them one at a time, if that does not cure it I will put the old one back in and try the same on the next one but I'll have to by a new reader which will also program the injectors.

Has anyone come across this before and if so did they manage to fix it........reasonably cheaply

All suggestions/advice gratefully accepted.

Many thanks

As a further update, no issues with the car since the day after I picked it up after it had been to the unsuccessful diagnostic specialist. Last Saturday went for MOT but I was nervous in case the injector played up, but it flew through not even a single advisory and the emissions were excellent.

This has got me stumped.

Could it be an electrical connection somewhere as opposed to the injector?

The fault usually occurs when engine gets warm although on a few occasions it has happened as soon as I start it up.

The best way I can describe it, as a past petrol driver, is if one of the spark plugs stops working, so only firing on 3 cylinders.

You get a very rough idle with the vibrations and when driving there is a lack of power.

Some times I get the usual TRC Off and VSC lights along with the engine management light and sometimes none at all even when it is missing.

If your EML is coming on, are there no codes stored that can be read?

Further update, yesterday was damp and miserable weather, didn't get a mile down the road before it started missing again. No EML or other warning lights showing. Could it be a wiring problem, a loose connector or a poor connection
