I have a Corolla SR5 1988 with manual transmission. I changed the engine a few month ago (I bought this car not running), and I have noticed that, everytime I engage the clutch fast (not that fast... just quickly) there will be a clunk from the engine bay. sounds like a rubber hummer hitting the crossmember. I first thought it was the engine mount, so I changed out both front and back engine mounts. then I realized that the passanger side drive axle inner joint is worn out. so I changed that. Hoping it will be gone. BUt not! it's quiter, doesn't have the metal quality to it anymore, but still hits. and pretty annoying when trying to shift fast.

another thing that I have noticed is, if I sit the car still, with the clutch disengage, push the transmission into first gear ( to stop the output shift from spinning). and then pull it out ( output shaft shouldn't be spinning anymore, since the clutch is disengaged the whole time ). Then let go the clutch fast, there will also be a clunk, or more like a loud click ( probably from the clutch fork ).

I'm using new Beck&Arnley clutch. with original transmission. both drive axles are changed out. it seems to me, the clutch doesn't have a spring that's strong enough, or could it be broken? but engaging is just fine, no weird noise, if I do it slowly, if I do it fast, it will be just the clunk. could it be the clutch didn't seat well?

Any help? should I worry?

Thanks!

Without hearing the noise its self its very hard to diagnose!

Ive never heard a noise like you have explained b4, but then again the only time i let the clutch out hard and quick is when im pulling 7000rpm or more! And at that revs the induction and exhaust take over any noise!LOL
