Struggles to start please help!

Hi all,

I have a 2.0 D4D TR 2008 MK2 which has done 260k on the clock. Since a year or so it takes a fair few cranks for the engine to turn but once its running it is sweet and also starts first time after, if it is started with the engine kind of still warm. But sometimes it just does not want to start and it is really taking up my patience 😞

I have changed the Fuel Filter but issue still stands and Oil + Filter has also been changed.

Please advise any good Fuel cleaners to put in the Fuel Tank (or any other suggestions) as I know this will be a Fuel related issue but I want to go down the cheapest option first without replacing the Injectors.

Thank you in advance for your help!

🙂

I'd try changing the glow plugs if it doesn't start well when the engine is cold.

I had a similar problem like that a few years ago with poor starting when cold (around 1-2°C sort of temperature) turned out to be the fuel shut off valve (side of the diesel pump and end of head) which has an upgrade due to the original spring internally not being strong enough, new has either strong spring or double spring to stop this problem. I bought the new valve from a Diesel Specialist (came in a genuine Toyota box with gaskets and spacers) for a fraction of the price dealers charge. If I can find the receipt I'll upload a picture.

Maybe not be your problem but could be worth looking at
