Hi.

I recently bought a 2008 Corolla Verso 1.8 automatic...overall pleased with it but a noise coming  from the dashboard area is driving me nuts..cannot pinpoint where exactly its from ..Sounds like a loose screw? but of course no one knows...Toyota dealership wants to charge £100 + to try to find it? but of course may never do so...I have to put radio no bit higher to mask it but not like to do so. It appears to start after the car warms up?? I think so..but happens with or witohut heating system or controls on.. happened all through summer...Spoiling my driving really and may consider selling as is.. Would so love to get it sorted.. Thank you

Hello and welcome to the club, have you walked around the car with the engine running to try and locate the noise outside of the car ?

Detecting the source of a noise can be notoriously difficult, and it’s almost impossible to do so just by reading a description of it. A video might help but no guarantee either. The best hope of finding is to actually be on site. I once had a new Ford escort, which had an annoying cracking noise somewhere around the rear of the car, even the dealership failed to discover what was causing it. Eventually after many months I put my 14 yr old son into the boot of the car, and after driving a few hundred yards he discovered the cause of the noise. Which was an easy fix.

When you say it happens with heating controls on or off have you tried turning the fan off I once had a car that had an annoying noise behind the dashboard and it was a leaf that had somehow got into the fan via the scuttle vents at the base of the windscreen.

Hi,

First thing you want to do is remove everything  from the glove box, door pockets , center console and all other little storage areas and from under the front seats,  it surprising how anything  loose in them can cause annoying rattles.

Second thing,  after the above, take someone for a drive with one of you in the passenger seat as the location of the sound may appear to be very different from there.

The passenger can move around more safely listening for the noise, which if its as loud as you say , then hopefully not too hard to locate.

Sadly due to my circumstances and covid i dont have anyone to sit with me!! this is the problem.... so have to wait til its safe...i am a single parent its tough at minute.. As stated in a previous post it's difficult diagnosing a noise if you're not there to  actually hear it.

At what point does the noise come on? Ignition switch on? Engine startup? When you start moving?

Does anyhing you do  change the noise? Does it change with engine revs or speed?

I don't have a Corolla Verso  but more info  might help others give you some idea.

Hope you manage to  locate it.

Hi Vosper D.. The sound is  same not dependable on rev, speed etc..yes  when i moving.... noise starts usually straight away.. always same pitch and sound............. sounds like a loose screw?? a large one!!  really no idea.... tried to listen ..emptied everything...Very frustrating..

I think have to wait to Uk safe and go to a garage..again.. but no one will spent days listening am sure...

thanks

Hi Gillian

Sounds like it could be something like a relay chattering or  a motor that drives  a heater flap that has broken. Although I have to say i'm not speaking from experience as I'm more accustomed to older technology.

Only solution is to find a local friendly garage to  have a look. They will probably charge less than a main dealer.

Sorry to  say that there will  probably be a cost but may not be as bad  as buying another car if you are otherwise happy with the Verso.

Is there anything else on the car that is not working as it should? Might be  a clue.

All the best

Don

just a thought:is the noise there when you are stationary or just when you are moving?
