My Toyota dealer has not issued hybrid health check warranty card with my last two services and my hybrid Battery is gone .They have refused to fix it free of charge .My car is 2012 model Prius.Where as on Toyota’ website it says that hybrid health check is included in every service up to age of 15 .Any suggestions what can be done about it .It’s going to cost me £1800 if I pay for it.

Does the service invoice not mention the hybrid health check was done?

When was the last service, and how many miles have you covered since?

What mileage is the car and what exactly is wrong with the Battery, any fault codes given by the garage?

Total mileage on the car? Is it used as a taxi? Was the car originally sold new by Toyota GB?

I’m curious. What exactly is happening now the hybrid Battery has as you say gone? What is the total mileage as I think that would be important to any warranties & have you taken out any extension Toyota warranty cover which is available up to when the car is 10 years old? Also very importantly, was the car serviced by a Toyota dealer?

The Toyota extended warranty is available up to when the car is 12 years old.

The hybrid Battery extended warranty is available after the 5 year/100,000 mile new car warranty has expired, and up to when the car is 15 years old (but there are limitations if the car is used as a taxi, owned by a company, etc). The hybrid Battery extended warranty is renewed when the car has a hybrid electric service (which incorporates the hybrid health check) and lasts for 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Hi Frosty, Thanks as ever for this info. My Prius is five years old next September. It’s only done 35500 miles & is still running like a new car. I’m reluctant to change, though tempted & I think I’ll be taking out the extended warranty. I didn’t realise it can be done up to 12years so that’s something I learned from you. Mind you I did change my last Prius when it was getting on for 7years old but it had done about 60,000 miles. I was pleased to hear that even after 12 years the hybrid Battery can be covered. A nice touch by Toyota but I doubt if I’ll have the car that long anyway! Thanks again.

Currently Toyota is providing 2 years extended warranty for the price of 1 year, so if you're going to extend the warranty, it may be worth seeing if you can buy the extended warranty in advance. I'm sure others have done this. Plus you get free 2 free MOT's and Toyota Roadside Assistance for the period of the warranty extension (2 years).

Plus when the car is over five years old, you can join Toyota's 5+ Club, which provides 20% off the cost of services and 20% off the standard MOT charge (which would be free under the extended warranty anyway).

If Toyota dealership refused to change Battery it’s for a reason as mentioned, car used as taxi phv, company car covered high miles, or been insurance right off, all these can affect the Battery life or it’s condition. Most common problems with hybrid Battery are dead cells due to a water(moisture) damage and or blockage in the cooling fan, running out of fuel and completely drained battery., missed service etc. If all been done correctly by the owner and car been serviced in Toyota dealer there is history to show on their website and no other physical proof needs as many garages goes paperless. If the owner knows that all is done correctly and as per their requirements he has to push them hard and get his car serviced under warranty, but if there are things done wrong way Toyota has rights to refuse. If this is the case there are some independent Prius specialists in London that can do battery swap or refurbishment for a lot less.

On Toyota’s website there is no mention of these limitations and it clearly says that there is no limitation on miles car has done as long as car is within the age limit and have  been serviced through Toyota’s dealership.

if it was the case if car is being used as PHV then it is not covered. Then,They should clearly mention it on website or to owner who is going for expensive services through dealership on presumption that he  is covered if any thing goes wrong with hybrid.

Moreover, they have been issuing hybrid Heath check card (warranty card) before with all of my previous services apart from last two.

The terms and condition of the hybrid Battery extended warranty clearly state that if the car is being used as a taxi then it will only be subject to limitations. Extract from the terms and conditions:

"Extended cover will not be provided for:

f) vehicles which are professionally used as taxis and have already had five Hybrid Battery Health Checks. "

As with any purchase or service, it is important to read any terms and conditions.

Sajid, you don’t seem to want to mention the mileage of the car or whether it’s being used as a taxi. Contrary to what you say I would have thought those are important factors in the investigations the likes of Frosty can make & help provide you with answers & information to your advantage. From past experience I’ve had a lot of very positive help from this forum especially off the likes of Frosty.

Well, it seem as if the Toyota recently updated their T&C or they have not enforced them consistently in the past as I know of people who had their hybrid Battery replaced on their cars even though they were using their car as taxis at the time .They were under Toyota Hybrid Battery Extended cover.

Even so, the current terms and conditions would apply in your case, so what may or may not have been covered previously is not relevant.

What exactly is wrong with the hybrid Battery ?

I can't find any POS80 code references online anywhere, only a generic PO580, which is a cruise control fault.

It’s very likely dead cell, bad connection. In London there are independent garages, Prius specialists they do deal with that sort of things , they can get the Battery fixed if it’s a cell problem or they can even change it with refurbished one, of course best place would be a Toyota dealership but if not covered under warranty and it’s so expensive then like an alternative.
