:help: hi all i am a new member with a problem getting a clutch on a celica 1.8st 1997. what is the difference between a 7afe engine and a 7ag? i understand that the 7afe means it is a 1.8 16v but i have a 7ag which according to toyota and all clutch centres is not a made model and the dimensions (o.d) of clutch do not measure up to any clutch made for any toyota?anybody know the difference? thanks a lot ....alan.

They`re right .... No such animal. :(

However what you more than likely have is a 7AGE which is an 1800 16v with different internals.

Hope that helps you.

With Toyota engines the first half of the code refers to the bottom end, the second to the head.

So, a 7A-FE is an A-series bottom end, the 7 refers to 1.8 capacity. It has an FE head which is Toyota's 'economy' designation.

other examples:

3S-GE is a 2 litre S series block with a GE (performance) head e.g. gen 4/5/6 GT

3S-GTE ditto with a turbo e.g. gen 4/5/6 GT-Four

5S-FE 2.2 litre S series with economy head found in some Camrys IIRC?

4A-GE is a 1.6 litre A series with a GE (performance) head e.g. many Corollas

4A-GZE ditto with a supercharger e.g. Levin or AW11 MR2.

You can generally swap blocks of the same series to make hybrids (usually t oincrease capacity), e.g. the 7A block can be dropped into an AW11 MR2 to give a 7A-GE, or a 5S block can be used with a 3S-GTE.

I hadn't realised that the 7A-GE existed from the factory, I thought the ST was a 7A-FE?

not sure. Looking at some of Phil Bradshaws articles and what you say seems to make sense

But FIDANZA actually make an engine specific clutch for the 7AGE. Very confusing.

Can you not take the old clutch to a specialist and get them to match it? Someone like Friction Linings would prob be able to help. :)

Welcome to TOC by the way

Forget the Fidanza thing. Me talking out my @rse again. :( They make flywheels and supply the clutches to go with them. American company. Sorry :( I`ll keep looking.

All the same. You should still have a 7A bottom end so the clutch really shouldn`t present a problem. Are they just replacing the clutch plate or the whole assembly?
