12v battery maintenance, issues, etc.

I went for the Yuasa YBX5012 in the end

Found the right Battery on the Yuasa Battery finder facility and found a local seller, which happened to be my local tyre shop anyway. £110 fitted (though I could have fitted it myself).

After changing the Battery, watch out for 'parking assist not functioning' warning. This will clear itself in a few hundred yards of driving.

@UncleZen I have a query for you. I have had an issue with my 2020 CHR as it did not start after 7 days of no use. I measured the voltage on the Battery and it was around the 8V region.

I went with some of the recomandation from the forum and got a Yuasa YBX5012 Battery but when I try to fit it, all is well expect the breather pipe. The breather pipe connection does not match the breather hole in the Battery. I noticed that the original battery had an adaptor which I pulled out and tried to put in the new battery but it does not work. Did you find any adaptor or new breather connection for this type of battery?

Many thanks.

@Ciprian88 well, I didn't fit it myself,  but I don't recall a breather pipe, sorry.

Breather pipe is on the 2 litre hybrid versions as the 12 volt Battery is located under the boot floor.

Managed to fix this with buying an breather adaptor from eBay, was not advertised for that specific type of Battery, but it does the job ok for the moment.

I think someone on the forum used windscreen washer pipe fittings from Halfords

Breather pipe difference in diameters can be easily dealt with small plastic pipe ends from any diy store near you, even anything left over in your tool box, pencil body, anything, it’s so easy diy job. 👍

Hi all,

Went away for a month and when I come back the car (2 litre- CHR) wouldn't start. When I press brake pedal and put on the ignition button, the headlight blinks a bit, show some parking brake lights and it becomes quite then. Seems Battery is discharged. Have called the recovery guy but any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

12 volt Battery is flat - might as well think about replacing it as its highly past its best now.

You will have some warning lights appear once its running as you need to reinitialise some functions - its near the back of the owners manual.

Modern cars seems all have weak spots and particularly the 12v batteries.
Leaving the car for over 2 weeks will almost guaranteed non starter on your return. Perhaps a solar panel, smart charger or disconnected negative terminal as preventative measure next time may help against flat Battery problems. You can recharge the Battery now for 10 hrs and if lucky you will be ok if not shortly after the Battery will require replacement.

Delighted to say that we have joined the club! 😉

The wife's July 2021 C-HR declined to start today. Jump started OK and now on charge (smart charger) but it doesn't 'feel right' - 12.2V in the car with the charger 'off'. I'll leave it overnight but suspect that a new Battery will be in order - Mutlu out, Yuasa in.

We've not had any issues with either car up until now - both are used regularly (in general) even if for not terribly long journeys. The recent history on the C-HR includes:

  • regular use and a good long trip to the airport
  • 12 days sitting
  • 3 or 4 hours driving over two days
  • 8 days sitting
  • a couple of miles down to the village and back
  • a day and a half sat in the garage and then wouldn't start

My guess is that the accumulation of 'rest days' proved too much, but even so ...

A year ago I had flat Battery problems. It seems to be common to most hybrid systems. The car manufacturers, including Toyota, build in the cheapest Battery that will do the job because its load factor is light. The answer I find if you are a low mileage user or don't use the car for 2 days or more is to trickle charge it once fortnight, overnight. The expensive way is to buy a bigger capacity Battery. Halfords are aware of the problem and will do it on site for about £110. Problem solved according to size of wallet.

My C-HR Battery is usually 12.2 volts when it's left idle even if left for a few days.

Mine is the same, that seems too low to me though, but left it at Heathrow for three weeks and it started fine

Thank you. Once jump started it has been okay. I don't see any warning lights. The car is not much driven but has been 8-10 miles daily.

Thanks Frank. How I can identify which Battery has a bigger capacity?

Check out the Halford web site. It will tell you exactly.

Thanks Frank. This comes up for my vehicle https://www.halfords.com/motoring/batteries/car-batteries/yuasa-hsb012-silver-12v-car-battery-5-year-guarantee-160815.html

Are you referring to the number of starts for capacity?
Many thanks,

Sol

It's a 54 Ah battery:

which is about the best you can get for a C-HR (or RAV4).

It is the same. The Tayna Batteries description states:

  • Other References  012, HSB012
