toyota say 62,000miles or 100,000km. I just changed the cambelt on our starlet at 58k and it was in good condition although the alternator belt was nackered.

It's a straight forward job, and on a UK car. ANY garage should be able to do it.

you could Do it yourself its not a hard job, the worst bit for me was keeping the crankshaft from turning to undo a bolt. in the haynes manual it said use a screwdriver in the flywheel which is what i did, but later i found out you could just leave the car in gear, and get an assitant to press the brake.

anyway that aside toyota wanted £156 for the belt fitted, I did it myself and it cost me £12 and and a sunday morning, but thats mainly cos it took me ages to undo the bolt! I can post instructions if anyone wants them.

There's a Haynes manual for the paseo?! I never seen one! I don't think I could trust myself doing any job like that! I'll get a proper mech in I think...Cheers for the info though!

i should have mentioned it was on a starlet, i used a corolla manual as guidance, the only thing it said was i'd have to take an engine mount out to fit although in the end i didn't. other than that it was spot on.

you dont need anything to stop it turning just a parker or touch up pen to mark where the cog was in comparrisson with a mark you paint on the engine too,do what you need line that up and the top up and away u go!

bit of a misunderstanding.

the bolt on the crankshaft pulley that drives the alternator has to be removed to get the lower cambelt cover off. to get this bolt off, you need to stop the crank from turning.
