If I fit a new Battery on to my 4th generation 2014 RAV4 diesel, will I need to inform/ update the engine management system ?

Just a note to allow the car to go into 'hibernation' first i.e. wait 5 minutes or so after driving (if you intend driving) before you change the Battery.

David,  Why????

Why not????

It allows the BSI to go into sleep mode 'power save' to avoid the possibility of corrupting the BSI software.

That sounds like Peugeot/Citroen, but does it apply to Toyota?

Out of curiosity, what is a BSI and what does it do?

I understand it is Body Systems Interface.  In Peugeot/Citroen multiplexed vehicles, it handles everything except the engine, gearbox and folding roof, which have their own ECUs.  The PSA implementation is very sensitive to loss of electrical supply whilst it "awake" which can corrupt the software, necessitating a reboot which presumably reloads the software from non-volatile memory.  It can be a bit of a song-and-dance, because opening a door on a newly rebooted system can cause re-corruption.  The work-around is to lower the driver's window before rebooting, and, after rebooting, switch the sidelights on before opening the door, but this is allegedly not necessary on newer models.

For the full story see here.

I have not heard of this issue with other manufacturers, hence my question.

Ok thanks I always did this on Peugeots and thought some Toyotas could be effected by Canbus and BSI as well when changing the Battery. My apologies.
