Hi peeps. Newbie here so please be gentle. Having recently purchased my mr2, I noticed there were large drops of oil beneath the car during the morning inspection. Took it to toyota who said the cam cover gasket needed replacement. Anyway, after replacing the gasket everything seemed fine until a week later - more oil underneath the car. Took it back to toyota and was told that they needed to re-seal the cam cover. My question is what would cause the cover to come loose again causing the oil to leak. Also is there anything that can be done to prevent this from happening again. Cheers.

the retainer bolts have a rubber/metal washer, the rubber goes soilid over time and the bolts come loose with vibration and it leaks again. Other oild leak that looks like cam cover gasket is head gasket under the intake manifold where the big oil galleries are, the weep oil there too about 10,000 miles before the gasket totally gives up.

If your talkin about the Cam Cover, pretty easy... Dont know if years make a difference but this is for a Turbo...

1. Remove spark plug wires

2. Remove Piping from Intercooler to Throttle Body

3. When you remove the small pipe right in front of the throttle body its recommended you change the gasket when re-installing(as with all gaskets)

4. Remove the bracket

5. Remove the Throttle Body from the intake manifold. (Might as well give this a good cleaning it usually has a good amount of buildup)

It is possible to take the cam cover off with the throttle body on but i had a VERY VERY HARD time and when re-installing, the seal got twisted and didnt notice till i took it around the block, had to do it all over again...

6. You may have to remove the BOV and EGR, i cant remember...

7. Remove Vaccum lines from cam cover.

8. Remove the 9 or 10 screws holding the cover on

When putting the new seal on, make sure you use the new hardware that should come with the gasket... those metal/rubber grommets and use a sealant around the sharp corners of the cams when re-installing or you wont get a tight seal. After a couple drives, make sure the screws didnt loosen up. Also when re-installing dont over-torque the screws, its kind of easy to strip the threads... I think i got everything...
