Battery Disconnection

Hi guys n Gals, Just got myself a 1998 Corolla Sportif :) and would like to fit my Kenwood head unit, however on reading the owners manual it makes a big thing about not disconnecting the Battery in the SRS Airbag section.

Id be gratefull if someone could shed some lite as to what will happen when I disconnect the Battery to fit all my ICE stuff.

Thanks

Chris

you dont need to disconnect your Battery to fit ice... unless its an amp.. which requires a wire directly from the Battery.... in such a case.. im just guessing, but maybe you should use a memory recorder unit thingie. incase sensitive information about your airbag is kept within something... thats lost when you discon the Battery.

worse comes to worse ask your local toyota dealer, but if its just a headunit, you dont need to discon the battery.

Chris,

If you want to play it safe, get a jump lead and connect it to the Battery terminal and the main lead, so that when you unscrew the main lead there would still be continuity.

I find it funny though that one can never disconnect the Battery due to the airbag, probably it's refering to another Battery dedicated to the airbag. Batteries do get faulty from time to time, so they need to get replaced. It's better if you discuss it out with your dealer.

Ive now disscussed it with the dealer and they recon there is no problem as long as the system isnt powered up with the srs power disconnected (Dont know why one would do that).

Actually, I found out the hard way what would cause problems with the SRS system: turning the key to on with the instrument cluster not plugged in... apparently, the SRS airbag computer has control issues and goes bonkers if it doesn't have the little red airbag light in the instrument cluster to turn on and off. Mine decided to short circuit upon finding out it had no light to control. 'Twas ok though, as my car had yet to have the airbag controller recall fix performed. (it involved fitting a plastic waterproof shield over the airbag controller under the centre armrest/console, and replacing the computer itself) Thankfully, it was free. If it hadn't been, needless to say I would have no airbag, as a new computer cost $550US.
