Which new style Avensis

Hiya,

So, my 2005 Avensis is in workshops and, might be terminal - dependant on price.  That means I might be looking for a new car short notice.  I absolutely love my Avensis, I've driven 120,000 miles in it from second hand 12 years ago.  Been pretty much faultless (new clutch and new starter) the only things common to go on them apparently.

Which new shape Avensis should I go for?  Mine is a 1.8 VVTI Petrol.  Is there any to avoid like the plague?  I have a family of 4 and one of daughters is 5 ft 10 in - I am 6ft 4 in so, is there plenty of room?  Should I look for the estate rather than the saloon?

Thanks for the help 🙂

I didn’t know there was an Avensis model that was a hybrid.

Thanks guys,

It's a shame that Toyota don't make the Avensis any more 😞 I suppose everyone wants the SUV's these days - oh well.

My beloved Avensis is in the garage as we speak - waiting for the bad news 😞 I shall almost certainly go for a petrol.  Diesel is the spawn of Satan now (thanks to DPF's) and the mileage I do probably wouldn't make any major difference in fuel consumption to be honest.

Thanks for the answers 🙂

Avensis stopped production a few years ago so it’s definitely sure that Toyota would not do a hybrid on a model stopping production.

The Avensis ended production in 2018 and a hybrid Avensis was never made - suppose because the Prius had the same size wheelbase and was in the same market sector. The Prius Plus was available as an mpv/estate alternative.

So those of you that like the size of the Avensis your choice of a younger vehicle lies with Prius, Prius PHEV, Corolla TS (estate), Corolla saloon, or Auris TS estate. All these are hybrid but basically similar wheelbase as Avensis was.

The Auris Touring Sport had the same wheelbase as the hatchback, so rear legroom isn't as good as the Avensis/Prius/Corolla Touring Sport and saloon.

I always thought Auris TS looked bigger then the hatch, looked better IMO but looks don’t make it longer 🙃

My plan is hopefully to replace our Avensis estate with a Corolla hybrid estate in a year or twos time. I thought they looked roughly the same size.

I am on my second Avensis which I got September 2015. I had my first a '98 Mk1 1.8 GLS from 2003 to 2016 (I had both cars at the same time for 6 months). I always wanted a petrol, due to the up and coming ULEZ that was meant of started 2019, but has been delayed until October this year. When I was looking for my next Avensis, I did consider the T25 Mk2 hatchback, but I wanted something slightly more modern. My car is the standard (non-nav) version TR Valvematic Tourer  estate. So I miss out on the reverse camera, but I got a Fresnel style lens by the back window and never had trouble getting into a parking space. I also get cruise control not available with the 1.8 VVTi, plus 6th gear for more relaxed cruising. I also added a better Bluetooth/USB adapter, because the one in the car only supports voice calls. The second adapter supports music and other multimedia features. Later updated Avensis get better bluetooth support.
The major change is the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). There have been some faults with the unit mentioned on this forum, but a lot have been caused by external issues and not the unit itself. Some have proven this because I read from this forum, garages decided the fault was the EPB unit, but owner found the fault to be something else and fixed the fault at a much cheaper cost. I have had EPB faults and one was caused by the gear position sensor not securely connected after a clutch replacement!

I regularly service my car and the only parts I had to change outside of routine brakes, was the water pump. That was simple and include a new drive belt. Any gremlins I had, have not appeared since I replaced the Battery last year.
I don't know what car I to replace my Avensis, but the Corolla TS is high on the list.

Surely the Camry replaced the Avensis, effectively?

There was aCamry some years ago, very nice car, luxurious. Then new Camry is bigger then the Avensis I think.
