I`m coming up to 17 and have saved up around £4,000 for a first car, ideally something good, and japanese (like a Starlet ;) ). What sort of starlet can I get for around £2,500, the rest of the 4k will have to be spent on insurance. What should I look out for, and what sort of modifications are available for it?

An old EP71 with some flared arches would look truly wicked :D

Finally, anyone have any Starlet (or similar good first cars) for sale in the <2500 bracket? :)

Cheers, Sam :)

Look for an EP82 Toyota Starlet GT Turbo or a .. EP91 Toyota Starlet SR as you folks call it. If your importing from Japan you'd want a Starlet Glanza V ( Charged like the GT Turbo ), or the Glanza S ( Everything like the Glanza V in terms of looks etc without turbocharger)

Starlets have alot of aftermarket parts, mainly the 4EFTE engine which comes in th GT Turbo/Glanza, but the other engine varients you can get osme power out of those little things also.. so you have alot of possiblities... bodykits, air flow, exhaust, trd items, tom's items..

As a first car i wouldn't go near the Glanza, its an import and will cost a packet to insure. In fact I don't think a lot of insurance companies would even insure you.

for £2500 you could get a nice 96-99 starlet SR (EP91), which has all the electrics and fairly nippy 75hp engine. you'd probably have some change left over from £2.5k.

For a bit less you can have a starlet sportif which has the same engine but doesn't look as sporty, its not lowered and the 3dr model does not have power steering, although in all honesty i don't think any car that small needs power steering. I thnk it is 1 insurance group lower too but thats about it. I would go for the SR if available.

The things i would look out for a car alarm, Starlet security is crap. When I was fitting our car alarm i managed to bridge the two wires in the ignition box and make the engine start. It will cost more for a car alarm but you'll get that back in reduced insurance after 2 years. Plus it deters the total such an incredibly beautiful personts that are out on our streets robbing cars - I've been done twice and it peeved me off.

As for mods, the first i would say is decent brakes, the OE ones are crap. Get a set of black diamond or 3G. Then change air filter and go for a de cat, these won't affect your insurance.

can't think of anything else. have a nice day

Hey sam ive had my starlet spotif since April, brilliant car, a bit of a granny mobile in standard form but ive sorted that. I payed £1900 for mine and its a 1997 P reg. Oh yeah mine is the 3dr sportif and it DOES have power steering nrgizerbunny was wrong about that.

The power steering is the only luxury ive got tho, no eleccy windows or central lockin, u get all that in the SR's and the CD models.

Carried on from above.

Im 18 and it cost just under a grand to insure fully comp. It was done under my mums name who is 42 but its her first ever insurance policy which is why it's expensive.

So far on mods ive spent £568 which are as follows;

Aiwa CD head unit £70 (sub and amp were free)

Carbon fibre 4" jap back box £140 (including fitting)

Second hand 15" Toyota Yaris T Sport wheels £100

Set of 4 Toyo Proxes T1-S tyres £145

HKS panel filter £13

35mm lowering springs £100 (including fitting which was £10)

Just thought id give ya an idea. My car now looks, handles, and sounds alot better from standard :D

Bunny I think your going a bit overboard.. a Glanza is a wonderful car.. a SR or SPORTIF are nothing like it.. it's like comparing chalk and cheese. And a nippy 75? LOL, that's pathic.. it's slow as hell.

He could get a Glanza S then if insurance is the problem, it has the same bodykit/aspect/look of the V but without the turbo, and it used a pepper 4EFE engine with a different ECU and some other parts which set it aside from an SR or any other variation.

You can only mod a 4EFE so much, then you hit a roof... go get CAMS,portno polish head, change gearbox, MSD. everything... all that cash, and a Glanza V will still blow it out the water standard..

hi crystal,

the insurance on a glanza is horrific! it was never officially imported into the UK by toyota so insurance will probably cost more than the car if your 17 and have no "no claims" bonus then most insurance companies won't touch you. The sportif/SR are group 4 (i think) the glanza is group 16, same group as my golf.

I totally agree that its slow compared to a glanza but I think you could get something better value for money.#

My girlfriends insurance was £685 Third Party through tesco, but she's 22 and has no no claims and in bristol parked on a road but with a Cat 1 alarm. without the alarm its £750

have a nice day

Yeah the SR is a group 5, insurance is costing me just over £300 for 2 yrs NCB with 5 years driving experience, it was £800 b4 for me. I think the Glanza will be a bit pricey for a 17year old.

crystalize i think nrgizerbunny wasn't saying the glanza is a bad car, just that it's too pricey in insurance and parts bit.

For Saam's first car i think the SR or sportif will be ideal. So Saam go look at some of them starlets

Thanks

My mistake then guys, Glanza/GT Turbos are high insurance costs here also, but still affordable. What about a Import Glanza S? it doesn't have the turbo charged engine what would the insurance on that? Im sure it would be the same as the SR, or a tad bit more.

Well for a first car i think the SR/sportif will be fine, then he/she can decided whether to change cars. We are not saying that the Glanza's are a bad choice, it's what he can afford and how to get one.

Decision is up to Saam :)

I agree with most ppl on u should get a Sportif or SR. ne way what is the power difference between a Glanza S and a SR. i am only payin £600 with 3yrs no claims and am 20. thats pretty cheap i think. am saving up to get more power out of me SR. At the mo am thinkin i want a AE86. I miss the one me dad had that would be better than ne Glanza v i recon. i got a quote for £1300 for insuring a AE86. give it a yr i think i mite get one.

As I said your limited by the power of the SR.. because of the engine The amount of money you'll spend trying to get it up to spec, would be better spent swapping the engine or turbocharging it with all th components from an EP82 GT Turbo or a Glanza.

The power gains are noticable, the glanza S is quite torquey, it used a different ECU, it uses different fueling components, to give it more fuel etc.The ECU is the biggest difference by far tho.

The starlet SR is totally the same engine as the sportif, a 1.3 engine giving only 74bhp, not a lot i know, but the only thing about SR is that it comes with the TTE rear spoiler, TTE silencer exhaust, TTE lowering springs, Speedline 15" rims, that's the only thing nice about it.

As for the Glanza S it has 100bhp i think? aint sure about them.. As for Glanza V has 130bhp on a 1.3cc.

AE86 is a very rare car also, don't suppose you see Initial D, excellent Japanese Animated cartoon.

Paul you still see toby around?

Posted

it has around depend on the year. 90-100bhp from the 4EFE engine. Glanza S basically comes with Bodykit, the pretty front, pretty back, sweet looking interior, well no comparison really.

EP82 GT Turbo is @ 130BHP

Glanza is @ 135BHP

Won't see Toby prob till i go back an that won't be till end of sept. i ain't seen that cartoon. i really want a AE86 i have driven one, me dad had one but the Shell wasn't very good so he sold it and splashed out on a 1999 impreza turbo which is a nice car but makes u drive like a ******. me mum had a paseo st that was ok. so as u can see my family is into ace jap cars.

End of the day any vehicle that wasnt officially imported into the UK will cost at least 3 times more to insure than the equivalent UK car no matter waht the engine is.

:crybaby:

Ohh ok, I wasn't sure about the importation laws you give have.. That's acceptable if your rich, not like where I live if the vehile is more then 4 yrs old it can't be imported.. It's as simple as that. WHICH SUCKS lol. Cause their only a handful of Glanzas on the road, about lemme see 10-15 vs.. ALOT OF GT turbos.
