2.2 D-4D engine

A quick question if anyone can answer. My 2010 2.2 D-4D has a head gasket problem that will cost a fortune to replace. I am looking to replace the car with a 2013 model with the same engine designation. The Rav 4 model changed in 2012 to a newer (different) body shape. Has anyone any idea if the engine stayed the same or were there any updates. I read that the earlier 2.2d engine which had the infamous head gasket problems had the problem 'designed out' in 2008 or thereabouts. Am I just unlucky.?

Exactly so ... the original acknowledged design fault was resolved in production in 2008 and so it is very fair to assume a percentage of cars registered in 2009 had engines produced in 2008 prior to the resolution. The affected engines were the 140 and 180 bhp versions ...

If your 2010 car has a 150 bhp engine then that was definitely produced after the design change. And we used to believe / assume that these engines were immune from the original problem, but we have since seen reports on these forums of a very small number of 150 bhp engines exhibiting similar symptoms. I can't see any particular reason to assume that these arose from the same problem - any car can have head gasket issues - but equally I couldn't discount the possibility.

The issue wasn't particularly common prior to 2008/2009 - just very upsetting and annoying for those affected - and appears to be relatively rare with the 150 bhp engines. So I believe that you are just 'unlucky'.

The 150 bhp engine in the 2013 and later 4.4s is a straightforward refinement of the earlier 150 bhp engine - as I understand, they are not exactly the same, but they aren't radically different either.

I've had a 2009 SR180 (and bet that the engine was built before the problem was resolved in production) and a 2013 D-CAT auto and not the slightest problem with either. Lurking on various forums I have yet to learn of a 4.4 2.2 diesel that exhibited the symptoms of the original fault ...

Good luck! 🙂

I had a 2008 Avensis with the 2.2 D-4D and it went on me a couple of months out of warranty, to be fair to Toyota they replaced the engine without question as it was a know fault.

I believe it was an engine that came from the Lexus range.
