Hi

I'm buying a hybrid and was looking at insurance quotes. So I hit the comparison sites and the only option on the list was the 3 litre petrol. Got a quote for £400 from a mainstream insurer. Happy days.

Logic dictates that the 2.4 Hybrid should be cheaper so called the people that quoted but because the hybrid isn't on any list they won't insure it.

Then called one of the specialist insurers and it's £250 more expensive for a lesser performing car.

Is this the norm for imports or is there a better way to do this?

Thanks

Unless you've already done so, try Adrian Flux and mention you're a Toyota Owners Club member - 0800 5876 317.

Hi.

Do please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you wish. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

Regards,

Dan.

Yeah getting import cars insured can be a bit of a pain as mainstream insurers often don't know how to deal with them - They rely far too much on automation and car databases. And you can forget comparison websites!

If you bought the car from a specialist import dealer, they usually have a list of recommended insurance companies that do import cars that you can get off them to try.

Hi Dan

Thanks for the reply.

I just tried your quote system and it's no different to all the others. You can only select a 3 litre.

Cheers

TBH you'd probably have to speak to an actual human - The automated systems are awful for import cars.

Have phoned around and here's a quick update purely as a comparison, based on my own circumstances.......

Alphard 3L Online Comparison Sites £400

Alphard Hybrid - Bridle £620

Alphard Hybrid - Adrian Flux £1700  - I fell off my chair!!!

Ouch! There must be better alternatives given how many Estimas and Alphards I've seen floating around!

Don't know what your circumstances are of course...but my 2003 3 litre V6 Estima is fully comp. insured by Flux at around £300.?..has been for the last 5 years.

Maybe it's the Hybrid element.?

Performance is only one aspect that insurers take into account. Cost of repair is another factor, and probably carries more weight. As the car is a grey import and has no direct equivalent in the European market, parts costs, etc could be quite high.
