Exactly. The only thing that happens as you open the door is an instruction appears telling you how to start the car. It does not start autonomously.

Except that it seems some of us do not normally get even that. As per my previous post all I normally see is a graphic of the door opening and closing then an empty dash apart from the mileage. I've only ever seen that message in response to me pressing the Start button when the break pedal isn't pressed.

Here's a video (sorry about the quality - it's hard enough getting in as it is without holding a phone while you do it):

Maybe what happens depends on the unlock selection made via the online car settings. Or maybe that little cuddly to that delivered the car has something to do with it.

I just noticed the instrument panel displays the ignition mode as you cycle the Power button

Hmm, most interesting - I see something different in my car (same Excel as yours @AndrueC but a 2020 model).

Here's another video 😊

I have a 2020 Excel as well and it seems to be pretty much the same as your video  The only difference may be that my interior lights come on as I approach the car but I think that ma be an online setting in the lighting bit.

I wonder if it's something Toyota added later? My Corolla was built in March 2019. I'd rather not have the message because it seems a bit condescending to be reminded how to start the car every time you get into it. With my model you only get that message if you press Start without the brake pedal in which case it's just prompting you in case you forgot.

..except of course for the once-every-16.5k-miles when it reminds you just in case you can't remember 😄

I've not actually noticed if the interior lights come on as I approach the car. The PDF manual page 486 says this:

Quote

Illuminated Entry System

The lights automatically turn on/off according to the power switch mode, the presence of the electronic key (vehicles with entry function), whether the doors are locked/unlocked, and whether the doors are opened/closed.

I'll pay attention the next time I walk towards the car...

I bet it is a later addition. My car was built in early June 2020 (the UK factory reopened in late May after the first lockdown closure) and this car included the latest at the time software including support for Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

I agree, the message is a bit nannyish. I think it's a legal requirement for safety.

Until this thread stated I hardly noticed it anymore. The last 4 or 5 cars in the family have done something similar.  I think that it is more common with automatic gearbox cars.

Intriguingly it did it again tonight as I got in to drive home. The only common factor being golf but that seems an unlikely cause 😄

I don't begrudge it - When I first tried the Mk2, couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start, then eventually realised it was because you had to hold the clutch down when turning the key to ignition!

Did the same thing the first time we had a Push Button Start car - Kept poking the button and cycling between ACC and On until we realised you had to hold the brake down before pushing the button to actually start the engine!

It's only obvious when you already know about it!!

I've realised with mine, the message shows if I have the key in the centre bin or left pocket, but if it's in my right pocket it doesn't seem to always show it! May be a Smart key proximity thing?

That's interesting. I usually have my keys in my left zipped hip pocket but perhaps it's sensitive enough to react differently depending on how the keys are lying. They'll have been out my pocket while playing golf so perhaps sometimes that shuffles them around.
