Any one else has got this noise from the top end from a cold start has done 1800 miles seemed ok when I first had car from new.

I am wondering is the 0-16 oil to thin and is draining away from the top end of the engine overnight and not retaining in the valve gear as it should untill oil arrives under pressure from the pump. Never had this noise on the auris in 18,000 miles. it is due a first service in September will get service to have a listen.

Take it back to the dealer for a nearly new car that doesn't sound right, what is the oil level like ?

In my Prius (same engine as 1.8 Corolla) previous services have used 0w-20, the service done a few weeks ago I was advised 0w16 is now the oil recommended.  The 20 was thin, i cant see the 16 being that much thinner to cause problems. I am sure Toyota would have thoroughly tested 16 in all conditions.

Oil level fine it’s ok on subsequent starts will wait till the service and leave car overnight at dealers and get them to listen in the morning if it goes bang in the meantime they’ll have to repair it or put a new engine in.

thanks for reply flash

Is the initial start on the ice at 00:03 that makes you worry? I can only detect little knock (clicks) and then after engine sound as usual.
What petrol have you got in? Poor quality petrol can make your engine sounds bad, loose performance, efficiency and range. Your car is almost brand new, I doubt it’s anything mechanical.

Have you been doing 12v Battery top ups keeping the car in ready mode for 40-60min weekly during winter lockdown?
This while helping to keep the Battery healthy has negative effect on engine oil and I strongly recommend to anyone who has done that procedure a lot during lasts two lockdowns to get its car serviced earlier than usual, just smell your engine oil if it smells a lot of petrol and touch it to check if it feels lube like or dry on touch like water. My one was bad since I had a lots of Battery top ups and also oil was consumed a bit, I used oil additives and then change with new and since then all is ok and consumption is less, ice likes to work at ideal temperature👍

I would say it lasts  for about 5 to 10 seconds it did start as a knock about a month ago you can also hear it inside the car when the ice kicks in when in ev.

no I did not start the engine during the winter to top the Battery up as you say i think that has a negative effect on the oil and engine I would charge the Battery every couple of weeks. I also use esso supreme or Shell v power have done since I had it.

I wonder if during he winter I would get the car out the garage to access something I needed the ice would start as the traction Battery was cold I would then immediately turn it off once out the garage can’t see that this would have caused a negative effect on the engine as I said in my initial post the auris never done it.

To me sounds alright, they all sound like that plus sometimes they sound different from the previous time you started it, sometimes they sound smother sometimes rough, it depends perhaps of few things like outside temperature , engine temperature, hvac settings, hybrid  battery charge. Previous generation even earlier models 2010-2012 had something wrong with intake manifold and sometimes on cold start they knock so badly like the engine will break apart, and smoke white from exhaust, some sort of moisture into the cylinders, not coolant though but same results., been fixed with 2012 update on the manifold. If the engine oil is thinner than usual is possible  noise to come from top end. 1800 miles for one year seems like ultra low miles, have you done any longer trips on motorway? If it’s me I will take the car for a trip 30 miles 40 min up and down the motorway then will park and start again next day to listen if it’s going to sound like that again.

Thanks tony went on motorway last week total 86 miles there and back smooth as silk no noises whatsoever.

perhaps I am being paranoid but I am finicky with my vehicles. I will get the dealer to investigate nevertheless and maybe ask for 0-20 oil at the next service as I had no problems with the auris I always think these days that manufactures are obsessed with getting the lowest c/o possible and fuel economy figures hence the 0-16 viscosity for the oil.

I have noticed this twice on my 1.8. It may have happened before, but now I listen out for it. Both noted occasions have been after the car had been unused for more than a day. Car has done 2500 miles and rattle lasts for about a second. Is it the tappets filling up?

Yes I believe it is but what worries me is it causing excessive ware on the valve gear the oil should stay there until it arrives under pressure from the pump as I said in the original post it never occurred on the auris which used 0-20 viscosity I am definitely going to ask for 0-20 when it goes in for service and see if that makes a difference.
