Windscreen Sensor Pad not fixing to Windscreen

My windscreen sensor pad is hanging by its wires supported by the rearview mirror.

When I purchased the car (used) 250 miles from home, I didn't notice it, or even know there was such thing.

Apart using sticky tap, how else could it be affixed to work properly?

You should have something like this dangling:

The neck ( wire cover ) should pop off:

Leaving just the sensor pad, as you can see in the picture there is a sliding catch at the bottom ( opposite end to plug ) you need to open this then place the sensor over the metal bracket with 4 hooks ( should be fixed to the screen ) once placed you close the sliding catch to lock the sensor

once the sensor is installed you can refit the the adjustable neck :
