Avensis 2003 Petrol Semi-auto, gear indicator not showing in gauge cluster, AC not working

Hi all,

Hoping to get some insight on the following issues with my 2003 Avensis Petrol semi-automatic-

The problem started yesterday. After driving about 8 miles on the highway and upon entering the town I changed down to 2nd gear (by engaging to sports mode) but it did not show that in the display (which usually shows the gear number when sports mode is engaged) within the gauge cluster. At the same time the AC stopped producing cold (it appeared that the compressor stopped because the fan was still working), and the trip computer went blank.

The problem was gone when restarted after 6 hours but came back again after a 5 miles drive on the way home. Additionally Battery check indicator was lit. I disconnected and reconnected the Battery, and it appears normal again. But I suspect the problem will come back after a few miles drive.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas what this might be?

Thanks,

TA2000

Could it be a 12v Battery problem? Perhaps not up to a healthy state. How old is the Battery and have you had problems with it?

Hi Catlover, thanks for your reply.

I bought the car used and I think the Battery may be 4/5 years old. It was out of charge a few times last year as the car was rarely used due to lockdown. I charged it a few times with a home charger. Now the weekly use is about 60 miles with 40 miles highway driving.
