Rav 4 engine problems

Hello everyone,

New member here. Looking for information to sort performance problems with my 07 T180. 138 k on the clock. Apologies if this topic has been covered before.

When the car gets to 2000rpm it stop pulling. I can no longer overtake as nothing happens when I put my foot down. Even worse on hills as it starts spluttering and I have to change down and screw it.

There are no faults on the dash. Here's what I've tried so far.

Egr cleaned, turbo cleaner, air intake sprayed. MAF cleaned. Dpf regen. Various other additives added to fuel.

Any other ideas would be most appreciated as I'm tearing my hair out. Absolutely love driving this car, but it's a nightmare right now. Fuel consumption up too

Cheers John

D-4d engine??, i had similar with my landcruiser, while there might be no warning lights, their could possibly be a code, reason why there wont be a warning light is emissions, emission didnt matter till 2014, i found this out while my landcruiser is down on power, using so much diesel, black smoke, Rough driving etc etc, the emi was reading the wrong temperature, maf sensor and a few connectors had done bad, get it on a reader and this will tell all, for mine it cost £165 for the testing and replaced connectors,  +200 for a denso maf sensor,  hope this helps

Have you had the injectors looked at as well, all this can be done on a professional reader

Similar problem to mine great to drive when it’s cold really bad lag as soon as it’s warm I’ve cleaned everything apparently it may be the warm up valve no lights or codes on I’m not sure what to do next

Welcome to TOC 🙂

My first bit of advice is to stop blindly throwing additives etc. at the problem, this is not the way to diagnose an issue and it isn’t quick or cheap.

Has anyone read the codes? Ideally using Techstream? A generic OBD can be useful, but Techstream only costs a few € for access and it’s worth it. It’ll also give you access to love sensor data which can be invaluable in situations like this. What you describe sounds like the car isn’t making boost pressure, so you’re not able to spin up the turbo and have no power up the rev range. This could be as simple as a loose intercooler hose and from a code perspective often comes up as a MAF issue (it’s not).

The absence of black smoke puts me off suggesting an injector issue. The T180 of that vintage did have known engine issues, but at 138K and 13+ years, I suspect you would have known about them before now. Have a look in the Guides section for more details of the issues and what causes them though.
