I just picked up mu 2010 1.4 diesel Yaris today. The gear stick says 6 gears, I could only find five. Is there a special routine to get the 6th gear?

Thanks

Nick

Hi Nick and welcome to TOC.

I had a 2010 Yaris diesel and indeed it was a 6 gear, wife had a slightly older diesel which had 5 gears. 6 gears was a much nicer drive and more economical.
No secret gear selection. Over to the left working to the right it was 1 forward, 2 back, 3 forward, 4 back, 5 forward, 6 back.  Reverse IIRC was lift up a lever on the gearstick , over to the left and forward. Is that how your gear stick marking is?  You should be able to select the 7 gears whilst stationary, as well as when moving.

Knew a guy who bought a 4 speed Maxi. 5th was broken, so the seller fitted a 4-speed gear knob.

Bob, I never heard of anyone who had a 5 speed Maxi whose 5th was NOT broken.🤣

Thank-you all, I am going to try selecting the gears without the engine running.

Ah the old maxi , they did have a very sloppy gear change but mine did go into 5th with a bit of giggling.

Used to run it between Reading and Lincoln as an impoverished student and had the usual BL distributor at the front drowning problem,on the other hand though it was fixable and very roomy , the seats folding into a comfortable double bed or a passable van .

Looking back I can't believe the journeys that were completed in old bangers like these with little knowledge and few tools , with all the advances since then cars still break down and it takes a dealer with a computer and a very deep wallet to fix .

That Maxi cost £90 (maybe £500 in today's money)

Of course I prefer my "modern" Toyota , but it makes me think about progress.

The shift pattern in the 6-speed Mk2's is:

R 1 3 5
  2 4 6

Neutral is between 3 and 4

R is gated and requires you to pull a collar up to unlock the gate in order to shift into it, otherwise you'll just get 1st.

Hopefully the gearbox isn't as crap as the one in the 1.33 petrol version!

OI! I resent that. My old 1750 Maxi was the right car at the right time for my growing family. It almost got me a FTD (Fastest Time of Day) at a grass autotest (lost by 0.2 of a second), gave me an outright win on an economy run and a class win on a trial. OK it often went round corners in neutral while I was trying to find 2nd.

You just may find that difficult in an 11-year-old vehicle if the synchromesh dogs are a bit worn. Better to have the engine running at idle while you do it (clutch in of course...).

Without a vin i cant really help, its either a EC65 or EC66 both are 6 speed, unless someone has fitted the wrong gearbox

Hi all,

Thanks again for the replies I have an update. I have now completed 5 trips in the car. In the first 4 could not get 6th after multiple attempts. On the last occasion I reached the giddy speeds of 70 mph. At 70 and above I could get 6th gear with a little fettling. Is this normal or have I got a quirky car?

Thanks again

You have a quirky car. Not is not correct. Haven’t a clue what may cause it but it’s not right.

Sorry to keep banging on about my gears but I'm hoping my new information will allow someone to pinpoint the exact problem. After almost 2 weeks of ownership I decided to take the Yaris on a tour of Scotland from my home in South Lincolnshire. Straight up the A1m no problem averaging 63.1 mpg. Turned left at Scotch Corner onto the A66 and hit major roadworks. In stop start traffic for the first time with lots of clutch use. After a bit the other 5 gears decided to join 6 and boycott the gearbox. I was unable to get any gear the lever seemed really restricted in movement. A quick call to the AA and 12 half hours later I was home. The next morning car back to normal and I drove it to the shops without a problem. So any ideas is it the clutch, slave/master cylinders or selector?

Thanks in advance for any help

Nick

It sounds like it stops working when it gets too hot.  I think it relies on the cogs to fling the oil around rather than an integrated oil pump+squirters, so maybe there is not enough gear oil in it or it has the wrong gearbox oil in it...?

I remember vaguely there was a thread where they found it was better to use a fixed viscosity oil rather than the recommended gearbox oil (Something like 75W instead of the recommended 75W90) because the multigrade was making it hard to switch gears.

You're welcome, but if you do try changing the oil grade, search the forums first for the thread with the actual oil they concluded was the better one! The 75 I quoted was just a guess based on vague memory!
