Underside rusty

Having put a deposit down on a 2004 Toyota Avensis the dealer put it through an MOT.  Dealer hasn't contacted me yet to say it's ready but I see on the net that it has passed the MOT but with an advisory of "underside rusty". Any advice. Should I be concerned?

Hello Alan , I recently MOTd my 2003 Yaris and the advisory was rear inner cills surface rust.

The MOT tester suggested wire brush and waxoyl to last a good few more years.

So as long as yours is just surface rust and no perforation of the steel ie rotten through or structural which it won't be as it passed its MOT ,then get under it and have a look if you can , better still ask the dealer to get it up on the ramp and have a look with a good torch.

Others may say walk away and find a better one ,it depends on price and condition if otherwise a good car .

Good luck with it.

My view too Paul.

I would say as well depends on how much your are paying for it and how long you expect it to last.

Could try and haggle for a discount depending on how much they're asking...

I've heard good things about built hamber underbody wax. If you fancy the effort you could scrub off as much of the rust as possible then paint with their zinc electrox primer followed by a topcoat

Obviously the price has to be right or you wouldn’t have bought it. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and work on the rust and treat it. My experience of rust is this, with hard work and treatment you can beat it back quite a few years, but in the long run you will never defeat it.

Cheers. Seems a good car just the niggling advisory. Weighing up my options and doing the calculations. May well have a friend with a ramp prepared to help. Cheers

Wifes Auris had an advisory last year on part of brake tubing rusty. Took the car to my local fiendly garage, he rubs the pipe down, coats with grease, this year the car gets a pass MOT with no mention of advisory.

Cheers. Some garages get carried away with their advisories!
