Yaris - Gen 4. Question for other owners

There is a noise that sounds like a fan that keeps whirring for a few seconds after i've shut the car down.

Anybody else got this?  And why has mine stopped doing this recently?  It seems to have stopped making the noise after i took it in for it's anti skid recall a couple of weeks ago.

Could be a few things:

Brake booster pump

Inverter water pump

Engine water pump

Fuel tank lift pump

Radiator/AC Fan

Do you get the same noise when you open up the car?

Battery cooling fan sounds exactly like that. When you hear usually it is after a long drive and when weather is warm, in colder weather and on short trips only the fan may not even start to spin at all. I like this sound though like turbo. 😉👌

Can't say i've noticed it when opening the car to be honest

Could well be that.

It was a warm day and an hour's drive, but i had the climate control on ice cold, so could that mean the fan turning off because the cabin was cool?

Definitely the Battery cooling fan, my one does that often since I drive a lot and for long hours. Even with AC running still depends on inside Battery temperature, usually Battery gets hot when car been used longer and in hot weather, then the fan spins at higher speeds and that’s why you can hear it but sometimes you can not, although may be working but at lower rpm. I can hear even some relays switch near the fan., I know there are some as I cleaned it and I had open the battery in the past.

I'm not sure if this is the noise you mean, but after I park and switch the car off but don't get out, after a while (Maybe a minute or so) I hear a whirring followed by a clunk noise.

I thought it might be the contactors for the Battery disengaging or something!

I've yet to hear the traction Battery cooling fan run in mine; Either the AC is keeping the car cool enough that it doesn't need to spin much, or it's really really quiet!!

I think you'll find that that is the steering lock engaging which either operates as soon as you open the driver's door or after a period of inactivity (as in the case when you don't get out but just sit waiting)

I use an Android app called "Hybrid Assistant" and this has a display section showing me when the fan is actually operating. It has 6 speed settings and unless it gets to 5 or 6, you simply won't hear it because it is too quiet. So far, my fan has never got above the 3 setting and I couldn't hear that either.

Ahh, thanks - I've been wondering about that for a while!

Hadn't even occurred to me - Am used to having a key-operated steering lock!

That Hybrid Assistant thing looks nifty. Is it just for viewing or can you configure stuff too?

Also, on a slight tangent, how often do you clean the traction battery's fan filter? I must confess I've not even looked at mine yet, but I'm told it's important!

It is primarily for in-depth viewing of multiple OBDII PIDs (Process IDs) from a bluetooth dongle attached to the vehicles OBDII port. I find it very useful as a guide to how well I am using the whole hybrid system. It also allows me to display instantaneous mpg (on it) and average mpg (tankful so far - on the dash) simultaneously.

Loads of other features like a (more accurate than the car) GPS Speedometer, 6 temperature parameters around the car, Battery fan action, Battery temperature and a whole host of other stuff on different selectable screens (available at a tap). Tells me how well I am using regen braking, gives me a window into the whole hybrid power train in a screen... loads more...

I have never looked at it on any of the last 3 Yarises (Yarii?) that I have had to be honest!
