Can leaving the boot open drain the battery?

My wife has just been stranded with a dead Battery in our 2016 Auris Hybrid. She was at a car boot sale and said that the boot had been open for the previous 4 hours. Is there an internal light in the boot which might have drained the Battery?

If you do a lot of short trips, and the Battery was already weak, could have. There should also be a dash display for open boot, that would drain the Battery.

If you are still on original Battery, it's likely that is was just weak, as flash22 noted.

Thanks for the feedback. Does anyone know how much Toyota charges to replace a 12V Battery these days? Or is it something that we can get done at Kwik-Fit or Halfords, which are both nearer?

Order one from www.tayna.co.uk and fit it yourself. Easy job. You have the same car as me. Here are your exact Battery models:

They are not the same the Hybrid uses an AGM Battery and must be replaced with the same type

they are produced by Yuasa for Toyota

Thanks for that. Do I simply remove and replace the Battery like a "normal" battery or are there any other considerations for hybrids? 

Is is reasonably easy to get at and remove?

There is a possibility that it could be 1 of 2 batteries on a 2016

S34B20L - 28800-YZZRD (left-hand Negative) - Hatch

S34B20R - 28800-YZZPC (Right-hand Negative) - wagon aka tourer

£175 is about right

 

Fitting is no different that any other Battery - remove the terminals, unbolt the clamp

its so simple, a Halfrauds employee can do it

 

You may be able to recharge your Battery, it needs to be charged at <4 amps the lower the better and it can take up to 48 hours to charge fully off the car

If you love the people that travel in your car only fit an AGM type Battery. For safety reasons “standard” batteries are NOT suitable. Yes, they are cheaper, but in an accident if a standard Battery splits high chance of acid flying around the driver/passenger area. An AGM Battery won’t do that. 3 years ago I replaced the AGM battery in the load area of the wife’s car. I went to Tayna in north Wales (they are good), only to find out later Toyota was the same price, so check Toyota prices, I found they competitive on tyres too, but it may be a dealer thing.

The AGM charging system is very different too, they typically charge at 14.2 to 14.8 volts at a low current (<4 amps), whereas lead acid batteries use 13.8 to 14.4 volts at around 10-12 amps (dependent on the AH rating of the battery)

I have a Ctek Multi XS 3600 charger:

According to the manual it "can easily be configured to charge many different types of 12V lead-acid batteries, wet batteries, MF, AGM och for most GEL batteries". It has a 14.7V/3.6A mode which is recommended at temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius, and also recommended for many AGM batteries. 

Presumably I could hook up this charger to the existing Battery in the boot to top it up?

So I spoke to the Toyota garage this morning and they have the batteries on back-order, with no idea when they will be arriving. The good news was that the cost is £120 inc VAT (plus £75 for fitting), which is actually better than price at tayna.co.uk for exactly the same battery:

He also said that it was fine to use my Ctek charger to top up the Battery (although advised against leaving it connected for an extended period like a couple of weeks).

Ian (it’s), the dealer not got batteries in stock, don’t know when they coming…… I would be wary of the £120 price, that’s is what they cost 3 years ago.  And £75 fitting charge, they got to be having a laugh. It’s a 5 minute job. If the Battery is still £120 when it does arrive, take it, and sort the fitting yourself. Interesting that £120 plus £75 fitting is about what Tayna are charging. It’s a rip off.

It's supply and demand, a lot of batteries are in short supply iirc the batteries have been on back order since may-ish they were up around the £220 in FEB

If I fit it myself, is it simply a question of yanking out the old one and slapping in the new one? I ask this because I've read something elsewhere about needing to maintain a supply of current to the HV Battery while the 12V Battery is disconnected. Is there any truth in this?

It's a straight swap. No need to keep a supply. Once fitted just retune radio stations.👍

The recovery guy who came to jump start it told my wife that she shouldn't use our power pack to jump start it, as it would be too dangerous. It's an 8000mAh power pack, about the size of a paperback, which we successfully used to jump start our old Mazda 6 several times. Any idea what the issue with that would be, or was he being over-cautious?

I have a similar Battery pack to jump start, never had any problems, never heard of any problems. Maybe he over cautious, or maybe he feels if every one had one then part of his job would be gone.

Oh that's good to know - so you've managed to start a Prius or Auris hybrid with it?

There's a jump point in the fusebox under the bonnet, there's a red cover, lift that and there's a flat metal strip to connect jump lead or charger. Just don't get the polarity wrong!
