Roof bars fitting for Rav4 2017

Hi

Getting ready for a summer UK vacation...I have a Rav4 without roof rails. I want to add roof bars so I can fit a roof box. What is the fitting / clamp for the roof bars? In some pictures, the clamps sit on the roof. In others, the clamps have an extender part that goes down to the door frame, and you close the door on the extender part. 

Also, there is a plastic strip inserted on both sides of the roof, with a removable plastic cover in two places on each side. If the roof bars clamp directly on the roof, without the extender, do I remove these covers and do the clamps fix on there? Or are these just if you want to fit roof rails - I don't want roof rails as I only us the box about once a year. 

I had a look on the official Toyota parts site but it was only selling roof rails. I need the roof bars and the fitting/ clamp.

I think the plastic covers you refer to are if you want to fit rails. If you select which ones you want the instructions are all on there might give you some idea?
