Getting There !

Hi......more or less decided that without a home charge facility PHEV is not for me.

Now looking hard at the latest RAV4 Hybrids.

Learned today that the Dynamic is available as a self generating hybrid (non plug in)

All the bells & whistles at £10k less, so far so good.

However a final query:

How does the PHEV Dynamic behave when run purely in hybrid mode ?

Does the larger Battery store up more of available regenerative energy ?

Does this deliver an increased all electric range than the normal smaller Battery pure hybrids ?

The PHEV has a plug, an onboard charger, a larger traction Battery and a more powerful front electric motor. This means that IF YOU CHARGE THE Battery you will get better EV performance - 46 miles range and motorway speeds (but not both!)

If you don't charge the Battery, and once the battery is discharged, it behaves pretty much the same as the standard self-charging hybrid. It does have a bigger battery so it could store more regenerated energy but there is no more kinetic energy to recover so there's no benefit there. It is also heavier and converting petrol power to electric energy is a fundamentally inefficient process.

So, if you can't plug-in the PHEV, save yourself a lot of money and stick with the standard self-charging hybrid.

Thanks Philip for a prompt, informative reply.

Seems the self charging hybrid remains the way forward.
