Toyota Yaris Hybrid Oil Maintenance warning

Shing,  you do check the engine oil level on “occasionally”, do you ?

So, i'm a bit confused, is it the low oil warning?

Since the Yaris, like almost all cars, does not have an oil level sensor, I doubt it was a low oil warning - The only oil-related warnings on the car are low oil pressure, and oil maintenance, which is basically a 10,000 mile count-down before the car tells you it wants an oil change.

I'm guessing the warning the OP got was the latter.

Bit of a ball-ache since I prefer to service my cars annually, but it looks like I'll have to get it serviced every 7-8 months to keep the warranty intact, based on how many miles I normally do a year!

Perhaps if the OP had read his Handbook he might have been informed of the reason the light came on ?

Well, assuming he knew he had to download it - I got jack with mine!!

To be fair if you're coming from an older 'normal' car, there is a lot of weird new mildly irritating crap to deal with on the Mk4 (And presumably all new cars since a lot of it is mandated by new laws...). I certainly have never owned a car that told you when it wanted to be serviced before!

For cars ordered from 1st June, they come with a 3 year/60,000 mile new  car warranty.

😳

What? They've dropped back to a 3 year warranty? That suggests they have less faith in their product than before.

Seriously retrograde and unimpressive. It will certainly affect their chances when I'm looking for our next replacement - new or used. Eg. AFAIK currently Hyundai 5 years, Kia 7 years.

If you look at point 2 of my previous post, you will see that I mention Toyota's Relax scheme.

From the 1st June, when a Toyota goes beyond the new car warranty and is serviced by a Toyota dealer, the Relax extended warranty (1 year/10,000 miles) kicks in. The Relax warranty is renewed every time the car is serviced by a Toyota dealer up to when the car is 10 years old. So effectively, the vehicle can be under warranty until it is 10 years old. The Relax warranty can also be applied to used vehicles under 10 years old when serviced by a Toyota dealer.

There is a topic on the Relax Warranty pinned in General Discussions that goes into more detail and explains how the scheme works.

The extended warranties that could be purchased have been replaced by the Relax warranty.

Up to 10 years has got to be better then 5 years and 7 years.

Mike, you need to read the facts before jumping to conclusions.

Seems like you don`t read Handbooks either Cyker?

Cars have been informing owners since at least early 1990`s.

The "facts" are that now you only get a 3 year main warranty, which is less than 5. Anything beyond is 'extended' - much like other manufacturers.

Reading the small print of the Relax thing may alleviate some concerns, but for a lot of buyers that headline "3 years" is going to be a publicity drag for Toyota.

They've had the 5 years warranty for I don't know how long while others played catch up, so I'm just stunned that they have done this. A lot of people are wondering why they aren't in the BEV market already and saying they've lost the plot ... this doesn't exactly counter that view. (I know the warranty is probably just a UK thing, but this is how people think.)

In reality I doubt it'll make much difference to new car sales as so many are leased and will be offloaded at 2 or 3 years old, but it might affect used resale values. I wouldn't have bought this car at 3 yo with the 3 year warranty expired unless I happened to know about Relax (and it covered enough for me), and when you are scouring the market for a suitable car you tend to look at the obvious numbers, not the fine print.

He's talking about the fact that most new cars since the early 1990's have had a "I need a service" warning light on the dash amongst all the other warning lights!

Thanks Colin. I was not inclined to answer myself as what I was talking about was evident.

I think that this new "Relax" service regime is just another tactic by Toyota to coerce people even more into using their dealer network rather than "back-street" dealers that have no affiliation... When you read into the whole scheme, yes, on the surface it appears to seem that they are replacing a 5-year warranty with a 3-year one BUT if you are willing to play by their rules, it's more like replacing a 5-year warranty with a 15 year one. What's not to like about that?

Before you say, I'll say it for you... "the price of servicing at their Dealers!!" 😉

I don't think that's the case. We've had 21 new cars since 1987 (Nissans, Hondas, Hyundais, Mazdas and Toyotas), from a city car, superminis, small family cars (Civic, Auris, etc), large family cars to MPVs, and the only two with a service indicator was our previous i20 (2015) and our current i20 (2020).

If 80% or more of all claims under warranty are approved Colin, it will be  very successful for owners and Toyota alike

My W202 Merc had one FB, as did comparator cars non Japanese cars.

Oh ok... My Nissan Almera GTi had one and that was a "P" reg ('97). From memory, the whole of the Almera range had one... My Hyundai Coupe (2008) also had one...

None of our British built cars (Nissans, Honda and Toyotas) had one and neither did our Spanish (Ford) built Mazda.

Ah, maybe it was a Japanese/Korean thing then... both of those cars that I quoted were built in their home countries (I think the newer Almeras (more rubbish IMO) that came a few years later were built up on Teesside)

At the risk of going off-topic, that Almera GTi's SR20DE engine was a belter and after it had been "breathed on" and mapped on a rolling road, it went like a rocket! 😉

No, I mean what is he talking about me not reading a handbook? I thought "what I was talking about was evident"

If he means that my cars had service indicators but I just didn't know because I didn't read the handbook, well a) that doesn't make sense because I would have known from the car telling me it wanted a service, not the handbook; the handbook would be redundant in giving me that information, and b) he's just plain wrong as neither my Mk1 nor Mk2 Yaris had them, and neither did any of the cars my mum or dad owned and they were built well past the 90's. My little brother's did, but he had a fairly expensive Mazda 6 which apparently had an electronic service history saved in the ECU or something; Hardly a common thing even now!

I think it's more like some fancy expensive cars built past the 90's and had service indicators - I'd guess they were not 'common' until around a decade ago, so definitely not something us common folk who can't afford such fancy cars would have come across until recently!
