Very loud Engine knocking

Hi I'm after a bit of advice, I have a Rav4 deasel 2005. There is a very loud knocking coming from the underside of the engine and you can feel it through the clutch pedal. I can only describe it as the sort of sound when you put a golf ball in a tumble dryer. Any advice on what this could be would be gratefully appreciated as we are supposed to be driving to Cornwall from Blackpool next weekend.

Thanks

... are you missing any golf balls?

Perhaps if you gave us some relevant details to try and narrow it down a little, does it happen when at idle? Does it get faster inline with rpm? Does it only happen when moving? Is it louder inside the car or outside? Can you affect it in any way, eg turning, reversing etc. In all honesty playing guess the noise via written word over the internet is fun and everything, but if you have a journey planned and can't be more specific, this may be best dealt with in person via garage.

In gear ? Clutch or diff bearings are shot and that will end up it a loud bang and a big bill - i would get a hire car for your trip as the rav will not make it

on the other hand, it may just be a stone stuck in the rim

2wd or 4wd ?

If it happens at idle and disappears when clutch is depressed, it could be dual mass flywheel.

Thanks for your reply, it is louder outside of the car and it isn't worse when you put the clutch in
