Clutch for a Toyota Yaris 1.4 diesel

Hi. Any way I can check if the clutch needs replacing now or whether I can leave it a couple of months. Had a service last month and garage owner said he thinks clutch may need replacing soon, but couldn't be exact.  Car is 2008 diesel and has done 90,500 miles.  I can't feel any problem on the clutch at present.  And what do I need to look out for, and can I leave it till nearer 100,000 miles?

If he was a decent mechanic he should be able to tell, so with him not saying it was urgent gives you some time….. but how much time.
One way of telling is to find a hill, go up it in a higher gear then normal and press the accelerator. If the revs go up but the car does not move as you would expect then the clutch is slipping. How bad depends on how you felt about the steepness of the hill and what the engine revs did in relation to increase (or not) in the speed. I don’t recommend you try that often.
It’s an indication. If it slips it shows the clutch does need changing. Get saving, or maybe you could get a credit card with 0% for a few months.

Ghetto ad-hoc way of testing if your clutch needs replacing:

Start the car, make sure you're on a flat level quiet road or carpark or something, then put the hand brake on, put it in 2nd gear and gently ease the clutch out.

If it stalls, the clutch is okay.

If it doesn't stall, you need a new clutch.

Another thing to look out for is basically what Catlover says - if you are driving and floor the accelerator, does the engine rev more than the car accelerates? If so, that's another sign the clutch needs replacing, as the only time you should ever hear/feel something like this is in a car with a CVT autbbox!

I suspect it's okay tho' TBH - The 1.4 D4D engines were weirdly gentle on their clutches - I've only had a replacement once across 2 Mk1 Yarisesisues and like, 7-8 years/150k+miles, and it was because I found it wasn't biting properly going up hill and assumed it was worn.

Turned out the clutch plate still had a lot of material left, but the diaphragm spring in the clutch cover was no longer flat so the clutch was engaging at an angle and not gripping properly until it was almost fully engaged - Didn't show up under normal circumstances, only when crawling up a hill in traffic. Mechanic suspected the previous owner was riding the clutch too much, wearing out the spring, but reckoned I could have driven with it for several more years from the amount of friction material left on the plate!

I changed the clutch in my D4-D at 150k miles, but only because I was swapping the gearbox for an 80k mile one from a breaker. It wasn’t slipping and there was still life in the friction material. I also changed the crankshaft oil seal while I was at it, since it was only six bolts away, behind the flywheel.

Hi

my Toyota Yaris is diesel- d4d automatic 2006.

I’ve never had any repairs or issues just a regular service and mot.

since Saturday there has been three occasions when the car just doesn’t move and only revs.

I then turn engine off and leave it a few minutes then  It starts again and drives fine.

im not savvy on cars but love my little Yaris (had a 2008 petrol one mbefore this one)

it’s booked in for a new clutch tomorrow at 650 pounds.
another garage said it was the clutch achuenter??

it’s done 112k miles.

just hope this is what it needs and nothing else.
any advice/info would be appreciated.

thank you

Julie
