Thinking About Buying An Avensis

Hello,

Can someone tell me,

I was out test driving a 1998 Avensis Saloon 1.8 (non VVT-i).

I was happy with the car, it was really quiet and comfortable to drive. The only thing that bothered me was the acceleration. I currently have an 02 plate 1.4 Corolla, and that seems to pull all the way to the red line, and its great fun. In the Avensis once above about 4,000 RPM there didnt seem to be any acceleration. Is this normal for this type and size of car, or is it a problem???? Even at 80-90 MPH on the motorway, when i dropped it into 4th gear there was no acceleration (maybe very minor)!!!!

Please help

I've got the 1.8 VVT-i so obviously it'll be slightly different but I'd imagine the weight and so on are similar and it has plenty of punch right the way through the rev counter, can't really say anything about the none VVt-i one though

Well i would have thought that even a non VVT-i would still pull all the way through the rev range, maybe not as well, and maybe not as economically as the VVT-i. I would have thought that any engine would pull all the way through the rev range but this just seemed to have no real pull once it got just above 4,000 RPM

Please!!! Is there anyone with a 1.8 Non VVT-i avensis that can tell me if this is normal!!!!!

I have the pre-VVTi 2.0 which is about the best engine they ever put in the Avensis, but I know the old 1.8 isn't very good power wise because it was designed to be economical and driven in a certain power-band due to it's lean burn design.

Personally I would get the 2.0 though because the economy is about the same and it's a much more useable engine in the real world.

Hi

I have a 1.8 pre vvti Avensis (lean burn engine)

It is really quiet, smooth and flat as a pancake !!

I assume it is because of being screwed down for economy as it seems to go a lot better when it is cold and the mixture is being richened for cold running.
